E3 2011 Countdown – Modern Warfare 3
The Call of Duty juggernaut continues to roll on. Although yet to be officially announced, retailers have already begun taking pre-orders in anticipation of Modern Warfare 3's inevitable November 2011 release window. The first two Modern Warfare's made Activision a lot of money, and with three developers now sharing the duties -- Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward and Raven -- we should expect an explosive, action-packed threequel that stays true to the Modern Warfare brand. It won't be without its fair share of competition though, as the hyped Battlefield 3 attempts to topple the seemingly indestructible Call of Duty series from atop the FPS genre.
What’s It All About?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be the eighth installment in the Call of Duty series. Due to a legal dispute between the game's publisher Activision and the former co-executives of Infinity Ward - which caused several lay-offs and departures within the company - Sledgehammer Games will assist in the development of the singleplayer, and Raven Software will develop the multiplayer. The game is said to have been in development since only two weeks after the release of their previous game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Sledgehammer is aiming for a "bug free" first outing in the Call of Duty franchise. Speculation surrounding the game's main campaign has fan favorite character Ghost Pilot returning in a prequel story.
What We’re Most Excited About

First and foremost, we just want to see something a little different. The Call of Duty formula is fine -- it's accessible and the multiplayer component can be mastered by even the most novice of gamers -- but in such a competitive genre, publisher Activision must be looking for a more unique Call of Duty experience, one that differs this game from its predecessors. The only thing holding the Call of Duty series back at the moment is a lack of originality. If we can get something different on the multiplayer front, as well as a single player campaign that is longer that six hours, we'll be happy.
