Is Call of Duty really in serious decline?

Bitch, please. I don’t care what the figures say, we all know Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will dominate the sales charts in November, that is, after it has officially been announced.

COD’s biggest problem is that it’s more predictable than Ben Cousin’s latest drug bust. We have all but confirmed that Black Ops 2 will be the new Call of Duty this year, and can assume that 2013 will bring with it Modern Warfare 4. There’s just too much potential to generate pools of money for that not to happen.

Modern Warfare 3 sales may have slowed now, but that could be put down to its insane launch. Over 6.5 million copies were sold during the first 24 hours in the US and UK, making it the biggest entertainment launch of all time. Most publishers can only dream of reaching those figures after several years on-sale, let alone in a single day.

It’s no surprise that sales have since slowed, and with the ridiculously high price of DLC -- $20 for a handful of maps and $70 per year for the rort that is COD Elite -- 34 percent of avenue from digital sales should have been expected. If anything, it suggests Activision have discovered another way to squeeze money from vulnerable FPS addicts.

I won’t be surprised if Black Ops 2 doesn’t quite reach the same dizzying heights of Modern Warfare 3. The series had to peak sometimes. (Real) gamers will argue that began and ended with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, but in terms of becoming the unstoppable juggernaut of popular culture that was embraced by the “COD Gamers” -- people who only play COD and Fifa -- Modern Warfare 3 undoubtedly surpassed all previous entries in the series. At least at launch.

Only time will tell if Black Ops 2 will mark the decline. Even if it doesn’t follow the trend of each COD game outperforming the last at release, it won’t be in serious decline. It will still dominate sales charts and be the massive mainstream game to play this Christmas.

Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if Black Ops 2 lagged a little by COD standards, but still embarrassed the competition by sheer sales numbers, before Modern Warfare 4 comes along and reverses this very same speculation, only magnified tenfold in 12 months time, by revitalizing COD as the original Modern Warfare did in 2007.

With successful annual releases for the past five years, Call of Duty is due for a quieter period, and the victim might well be Black Ops, but only by comparison to the franchise’s own success. There’s something about the “4th” entry in something that feels like it should have been a trilogy.

Activision have nothing to worry about. Maybe Modern Warfare 3 was the peak of Call of Duty, but Black Ops 2 will dominate in 2012 and Call of Duty will continue to be one of, if not the, biggest franchises in gaming. We’ve got a long way to go before the serious decline and inevitable reboot after a three year hiatus.

well there one probable reason of decreased sales is like everyone interested in buying it have really got it
Every year the game feels the same just cut, paste and put new coat of paint. CoD needs to reinvent itself just like when CoD4 came out back in 2007. What I like to see in a new CoD is the change perk system, more realistic gun physics/recoil, graphics and better maps because so many are close range, unbalance maps with so many narrow corridors and alleys. IN MY OPINION.
Many will disagree with my opinion (especially GreenThumb). I'm not saying they should but I just like to see future CoD games like that.
^ Lol. Why change a formula that makes them millions of dollars and obviously thousands and thousands of people worldwide still enjoy and find the game FUN. Regardless if it's a cut-n-paste job. (Which i'll agree with LMA0)

Honestly, The day Battlefield or the day another FPS knocks CoD off the throne is the day we'll see MAJOR changes in Call of Duty.

It's not truth or fact, It's just common sense thinking.
Battlefield and Halo make very few changes, but do people complain? Nope. I will however, say that Infinity Ward should stay away from the series althogether, after CoD4 they have shown time and again that they don't understand what the community wants which has been made extremely evident with MW2 and MW3. Treyarch are by far the better of the two developers, so if any changes are made, it'll be done by them.
Something i've stood by since World At War - Treyarch > Infinity Ward.
I think call of duty elite was a bit of a flop... all we heard about before launch was how awesome the stat tracking and everything was going to be and then MW3 comes out, with SO many less features than black ops.

I used to like how in the lobby waiting for the next game to start you could check everyone in the lobbys stats, fav gun, kdr and if you were keen you could even watch replays of the matches they had been in!

MW3 and all you can look at is crappy leader boards without having to leave your party, back right out of multiplayer and then launch the stupid 'elite' app just to look at these same things that where integrated into black ops and only ever a couple of clicks away, without having to leave your game.

Myself personally, MW3 has been a disappointment.

On topic though I do know out of the 5 guys I used to play black ops with quite regularly only 1 of them played too much of MW3 and even he's lost interest now too.

I just think there is only so many times people can keep playing essentially the same game year after year, I think the series does just need a break, thats not going to happen though because even if sales fall to 1/5 of what they are now there is still plenty of money in it for Activision.

Hopefully the in the next year or two with the new generation of consoles coming out it might breath some life into the series, other than that I don't really know where they can go with it...

Well if CoD is still selling like cocaine in the 80's then don't change it but just like any cocaine drug lord they don't last long unless the developers reinvent the series which is a big risk because reinvent a series can fail or succeed. I like CoD since 2003 but since I'm type of person who likes to try different things and variety and if the game series doesn't interest me no more now I just move on to different games. The 1st reason why like CoD because it was different and unique back then but since after CoD WM2 my interest in CoD slip and since I can't change the game series I just have to moved on to other Online FPS which interest me or looking for a new challenge but I still like CoD singleplayer and co-op. Theres people who change and try different things and there's people who are traditional and conservative. Even I still played Counter Strike 1.6 for nearly 10 years it's still my bread and butter of online FPS because it's my first online FPS ever played *_*
They don't want to reinvent it unless it's absolute necessary though, Like you said, It can make it worse and it could never recover, They won't reinvent it or any major changes until they are no longer the FPS kings. I'm not going to lie, I like Battlefield, I like the style of BF and how it's based on teamwork and the maps, But i mainly play CoD because i like how it's simple and easy to pick up, Jump in a party chat and just chill out.

To be honest, I've never played Counterstrike, So i can't comment on that, But like i said, I love CoD for the reason i stated and i like BF for the reason i stated.

Great discussion :)

We'll see. Something tells me that people are more excited about Black Ops 2 than they were about MW3. Certainly time to move on from MW imo. I'm looking forward to BLOPS2 though.

I can definitely see it doing better than MW3. I think "COD" has definitely branched off into "MW vs Everything Else", so you have your MW loyalists and your BLOPS loyalists. I definitely think it's harder to be good at BLOPS than it is at MW.

All of this conjecture about what can knock it off is really pointless, because the people that go crazy over Battlefield, or Counterstrike, or Crysis, probably aren't the people buying Call of Duty anyway.

The series' own worst enemy is its "casual" demographic. That's the demographic most likely to turn off a franchise after saturation. It's lasted so far, and I don't think we could have expected continuous growth year-on-year. MW3 still performed very well. Just not as good as BLOPS.

I am definitely more excited for the next Black Ops than I ever was for MW3.

inb4THEY'RE-ALL-THE-SAME

I must be crazy in seeing how different BLOPS and MW3 are.

Oh, and ten bucks tells me that Warfighter will be EXACTLY the same as Medal of Honor/Battlefield 3, with less change than what we see in COD. EA set its tone with BF3 and it'll stick with it for years. No way they're messing around with what is now a proven formula.
I stopped playing anything Call of Duty about 3 months after getting Black Ops. The Call of Duty community killed the game long before Infinity Ward crumbled and they started recycling maps and charging us a premium.

For me, and I might be in the minority here, games have to be fun in order for me to want to keep playing. And Call of Duty stopped being fun. I got tired of the trolls, racists and campers. The maps are too small and once you know the maps, a team can camp the limited points of entry to protect their precious kill/death ratio.

I traded all my CoD titles in the next day. It's the fact that it still makes a billion dollars that Activision doesn't care about innovation or even new ideas. It's like f*cking Hollywood, recycling everything because we keep buying them.

The only way we can let them know our displeasure is by hitting them where it hurts, in their wallets. It's bound to happen, but it might take another couple of titles before it sinks in.

Just remember how fast Guitar Hero died in the ass. It could happen.
oh i really hope so

[WTF]WHAT u never played Counter Strike? That's blasphemy [Rage].lol
That's alright u are new to online FPS but if u have the chance just play it once. CS is a cheap game, thousands of people still play it and nearly all internet Cafes have it in their computers because u still get school kids skipping class just to play it which I did when I was at high school. The developers CoD mostly have their influence from CS especially the Search and Destroy mode which came from CS's DE_ maps. Some people say that CS is still the king of online FPS but CoD is the king of today's generation FPS.
For me, the series started to smell a bit off when they started releasing expensive DLC in MW2. I hated the maps in black ops so I stopped playing that real quick, and haven't touched a COD game since.
@LMA0 Yep, Never played it lol. First games i really played online were World At War, So yes, I am new to online FPS. But i'll definitely give CS a go if the opportunity ever comes up :)

I've heard about the search n destroy modes coming from CS and from what i've heard, It doesn't surprise me that a majority of today's FPS' took influence from CS.

I wholly agree with about 90% of what you said BUT if you've really played through the Battlefield series you'll know just how much it's changed (especially between the two latest releases, BC2 and BF3 for example).
Not only that but DICE actually half-listen to player feedback and try to fix it through patches

Guitar Hero has an online community?
I'm tired of all the "CoD never changes" crap. Go out and find me one popular online FPS that actually makes meaningful changes to the formula. CS:GO = CS 1.6 with new paint and what, 1 new gun? Battlefield = same, Halo = same and even though it's not an FPS, Gears = same. The entire online FPS market has always been and always will be a place where developers create a game, use the same formula til it gets stale and begin again.

"Casual demographic... turn off a franchise after saturation..." thought the quote I selected made it a pretty obvious statement.
The point is. Cod is the only game which has been recycled more then guitar hero lol.

Kill it now!
