Rockstar Peaked With Red Dead Redemption

The headline says it all really, and it is quite a bold statement. Rockstar Games could be considered one of the biggest, but more importantly, best developers in the industry today, yet I'm going out on a limb to say that the studio could have very well hit their peak with the release of 2010's Game of the Year winner, Red Dead Redemption.

Rockstar's history is long and esteemed, but it wasn't until 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV that we really saw what this talented team of artists were capable of. It was the first major narrative for a Rockstar Game, and as far as compelling stories go, they don't get much better than GTA IV.

However I don't feel that GTA IV is a particularly good game per se. While Niko Bellic and co have a lot of interesting and heart wrenching moments, the game feels like a gigantic tech demo for me. It brings a living and breathing city like no other onto our screens, and they graphical prowess of the RAGE engine is certainly a marvel in its own right, but the game isn't exactly oozing with fun.

The shooting mechanics are clumsy, the relationship mechanic is infuriating, and the thrill and excitement that came with other GTA games was lost when cruising the streets of this new Liberty City. It was a brilliant piece of story writing, backed up by a fantastic city and technology, but the game itself was a little lacking in my opinion.

2010's Red Dead Redemption changed all that. The emotional tale of John Marston not only cemented the storytelling skills of the studio, but it catapulted gamers into unfamiliar territory. A combination of fantastic missions, varied side-quests, interesting environments and the intrigue of a game set in the Wild West was more then enough to make RDR one of the best games this generation. Each and every mechanic worked seamlessly, giving us a fantastic story AND more importantly, a fantastic game.

While L.A Noire may have started as a Team Bondi production, Rockstar certainly had a hand in the final product. Once again, the tale of Cole Phelps and co. was beyond memorable, and the facial animation technology was astounding. As a game however, it became so repetitive that banging your head against a brick wall seemed more interesting at times.

Now we have Max Payne 3 on our doorstep, and after playing through the entire campaign I can say that Rockstar has provided a solid experience, yet as a game it won't set the world on fire. Max's tale of revenge and desperation is compelling, more so than any other game I've played since Red Dead Redemption, but the mechanics are by and large, familiar territory.

What would it take for Rockstar to combine both stellar gameplay and this new found fascination with storytelling? I highly doubt Grand Theft Auto V will provide the answer, and even a Red Dead Redemption sequel would yield more of the same rather than something fresh.

While their games are enjoyable and memorable, I personally feel that Rockstar peaked with Red Dead Redemption. I doubt we'll ever see the studio combine gameplay, story and general feel that well ever again.

Yet they will continue to create great stories, with an unmatched cinematic feel, and that is certainly not a bad thing.

Never gonna happen and if it did it would just be a shoddy port.

I disagree that Rockstar peaked with RDR though

I believe GTA V will better IV for gameplay and with next gen coming soon possibilities will improve for larger, more detailed experiences. Rockstar have never let me down, i have faith in them.
Fair call @Dicky , I'm glad we can all have a serious conversation about this as opposed to WTF HELLER YOU FOOL!

Don't get me wrong, I really love Rockstar and their "experiences" are fantastic. I just feel they are more interested in making interactive movies than actual games these days, which as I said isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Rockstar make great games, and will still make great games.

Wow yeah, that's probably the first (and last) time iv heard a decent response from him :P
I think GTAV will rival it. GTA IV was all like "look what we can do", similar to GTA III in that respect. They'll up the ante with the gameplay in GTA V.

That said, Rockstar don't do bad games (at least not anymore, there are a few duds in the history books). GTA IV was fantastic, but of course I want GTA V to be even better.
well at least they aren't puking out crap every year with an annual release. I have to say I didn't think much of red dead but they probably don't think much of me either so =D
Ohh so red dead is better than GTA IV. As far as i remember GTA IV ranked 1st on Game informer list of Best games of this generation, 4th on Games Radar list of Best games of all time and 5th on MS Xbox world list of Best games of all time, higher than all this generation games. Red Dead is great no doubt but think before you say something about GTA IV.
Personally felt RdR was the better release. GTA is just too "Samey"
I no all of you love rockstar and there games.
yes they play well and look good but they seem to always miss the most important thing(imo) Pure and simple FUN.

they get carried away and most of there games are plan boring (imo).

It's his opinion, just as Game Informers list is someone's opinion. People are interested in his opinion so I don't think he should need to 'think' about it, dontcha think?

I don't think they've hit their peak yet but I agree that their peak so far has been RDR. I like Rockstars style of story-focussed games since they are one of the few that do it well. Don't particularly want them to make games based around simplicity.
Honestly don't think R* is even near peaking yet. Sure they have had climactic spots etc. but i still think we'll see something totally new and in a different direction again in the future.

Rockstar are my favorite =D
I've never played a Rockstar game [Derp]

/uselesspostoftheday
i agree that they will probably never reach this peak again, but i did not find the gameplay of la noire repetitive at all (i played it pretty slowly). I find the shooting mechanics of gta iv to be pretty good, i never really got into the whole relationship thing in gta iv and the fun of cruising around (i think) that came with previous gta games is certainly not lost in gta iv. Maybe the lacking part of the game is that it is much of the same as the previous gta games and lacks the unfamiliarity and differentness of rdr.
RDR was a great overall package. Awesome graphics, really REALLY great storyline and amazing landscape.
Me personally, I dont like cowboys and all that. I bought RDR and LOVEDDDDDDD it. Amazing game all round. And with the zombie mode, made it one of the best games I've played.

I think GTA IV was 'boring' because it was just city. GTA V has country side(as rumoured) which will make it more fun in my opinion.
The rave reviewed on Ballad of Gay Tony for their fun missions will hopefiully make Rockstar mix those missions with great storytelling like in RDR.

Am i really that bad? plenty of times i've given a decent response you just don't always agree with it.
I want to know, what responses in the past have i given then that annoy you?

This. I'm not such a big fan of country western movies etc, however I had 3 games to trade in at JB and the only game that seemed worthy at that time (May 2010) was RDR. So I got that, and man was I blown away!

I've played almost every Rockstar game (since they were called DMA Design with Lemmings) and RDR is the first game i've finished 100%, after clocking in 40+ hours. I love the GTA series to bits, however RDR is a game that is truly unique.

Excellent article, @Heller :)
I just love how Rockstar can create a world where I can become so immersed in it.

In GTA 4 I even obeyed the road rules and kept to the speed limit on occasion. Am I the only one?

I'm not even going to deny i'm getting GTA 5. And Max Payne is on the horizon too (I'm broke, so I have to save to buy games)
Sorry but I'm pretty sure Max Payne 3 is better than RDR
