With only a few days to go until an official reveal, tongues are already wagging after Sony released a few screenshots of the mysterious PS3 exclusive, The Last of Us.
One of the screenshots shows a lot without giving too much away: it shows a newspaper inside a heavily battered case, revealing a few little tidbits about what the game might actually be about.
I've taken the liberty to dissect and detail what it is exactly that the screenshot says so that you don't have too. But still: what the hell does it all mean!?
Here are a few thoughts:
Infectious Disease Outbreak
This seems like the most obvious scenery, no matter how many times it's been done before. Words such as "quarantine zone" and "infected" allude to it more than anything. Massive zombie breakout? Perhaps infectious disease caused by botched government medical experiments, ala. I Am Legend?
Alien Invasion
There's nothing especially obvious that suggests an alien invasion, although mentions of the military and human extinction might suggest that an extraterrestrial race has in some way infected the human race.
Chemical Warfare
Now this would be interesting, and is not something that has really been touched on before, at least not on such a scale where the United States was on the verge of defeat. "Infection" doesn't necessarily mean "blood sucking zombie". It just mean someone that is ill with a disease.
It's all conjecture at this point but there's certainly a few scenarios that come to mind just from looking at that image. The other screenshots bring us to what appears to be a lush tropical landscape, which makes things interesting. The inclusion of Texas and Mexico interesting, as is the headline, "The Last of Us".
Is mankind truly on the brink of extinction in this mysterious new game?
The VGAs couldn't come soon enough!
