How to get Netflix in Australia on Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC

by Ben Salter Featured 37 Comments 32 Votes 18360 Views 27/05/2013 Back to Articles

With the launch of Arrested Development season 4 — all 15 episodes at once — on US streaming service Netflix last night, enough is enough. Australians are technically ostracised from the global streaming service, but for just $13 per month on consoles and $8 directly through a web browser, Netflix is easier to access than its local competitors would have you believe.

It’s far better value than the rubbish offered by the exorbitant Foxtel and underdeveloped Quickflix (although you’ll need to look at Hulu for more recent TV seasons), Netflix looks the other way if you can circumvent its mandatory region locking, Arrested Development deserves the legitimate viewership (it's back for the fans), and it only takes about three minutes to setup.

Oh, and the first week is completely free. Although, be aware accessing content not licensed to Australia, even if you pay for it, is a legal grey area. It’s certainly not as bad as torrenting, but the legal ramifications are unknown.

Here's how to get Netflix in Australia

PC/Mac browser - The easy way

Accessing Netflix directly through your web browser is the simplest, and cheapest, method of tunneling into the US-based service. The unblocking application is free; all you pay is the US $7.99 Netflix subscription fee. However, it does occasionally lead you to an error page which is usually fixed with a return to the homepage or refresh (I found Firefox less prone to errors than Chrome on OS X).

Step 1: Get away from that ghastly Internet Explorer! You’ll need to be using Firefox or Chrome. We found Firefox to be best.

Step 2: Download and install an application called Hola. It’s free and will unblock most geo-locked video services, including Netflix (best for movies) and Hulu (best for current TV seasons).

Step 3: Go to Netflix.com and set up your one month free trial. It requires a credit card that will not be charged if you cancel during the first 30 days. After the trial period, Netflix costs US $7.99 per month (AU $8.30 at time of publishing).

Netflix accepts Australian credit cards and will ask for its linked zip code (post code) — add your post code with a '0' at the beginning or end and it should work. If not, choose any American zip code. In the unlikely event it still rejects your card, try a different browser or delete and re-enter the information until it accepts the registration.

Enjoy watching Netflix! If you hit an error page, refresh, go to the homepage, or restart your browser.

All Consoles: Getting a Netflix account in Australia via Unblock-Us

To use a console (or a media player like Apple TV or WD Live TV), you’ll need to bypass the geo-locking with your router.

The simplest way is a DSN “hack” called Unblock-Us. Its first week is free (no credit card details required) and US $4.99 thereafter.

Step 1: Sign up for a seven-day free trial on unblock-us.com directly on the homepage — don’t hit the sign-up button or you’ll miss the free trial.

Step 2: Head to the How to Set Up page to learn how to configure your router (or just see below) or specifically Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii U. We recommend setting it up via your router if you wish to use multiple devices. However, if you only wish to use one, it can be entered directly via the device.

Once you have set up your account by entering an email address, enter the following into your router’s DNS settings:

  • Primary DNS: 111.118.175.56
  • Secondary DNS: 118.127.33.48
  • Additional DNS: (if available)119.63.213.7

Step 3: Go to Netflix.com on any device and set up your one month free trial. It requires a credit card that will not be charged if you cancel during the first 30 days. After the trial period, Netflix costs US $7.99 per month.

Netflix accepts Australian credit cards and will ask you for its linked zip code (post code) — add your post code with an '0' at the beginning or end and it should work. If not, choose any American zip code. In the unlikely event it still rejects your card, try a different browser or delete and re-enter the information until it accepts the registration.

Start watching Netflix on your PC or Mac, or follow the instructions below to use your consoles.

Step 4: Confirm your network is configured correctly by going to Unblock-us.com using the Internet browser on your preferred device (example: head to the site using your PS3’s browser if you wish to use Netflix on PlayStation 3 and it will confirm the network is working properly).

Netflix on Wii U

Wii U is my favourite device for Netflix. The quality is as high as the Xbox 360 and PS3 apps, with GamePad functionality. It’s easier to browse and search on the GamePad, which is used for all selections while the content is played on your TV. It also supports off-TV playback to watch videos while the TV is otherwise occupied.

Step 1: Follow the instructions above using unblock-us.com to access a Netflix account.

Step 2: Change your country settings to the United Kingdom. This can be found in the third-to-last panel in the settings menu. Ignore the error that your Nintendo Network account cannot connect to the Internet.

Step 3: Create a new user account by clicking on your Mii in the top lefthand corner of the GamePad screen and selecting "new account". You’ll need to make a new user account and a new Nintendo Network ID.

Step 3: Now that you can access the UK eShop, download the Netflix app.

Step 4: Open Netflix and sign in with your Netflix account to start watching TV shows and movies.

Step 5: Change the Wii U's country in the settings menu back to Australia and log in with your Australian Nintendo Network ID at your lesuire. Netflix will continue to work (if presented with an error at any stage, log in to your UK account).

Step 6: Launch Netflix and sign in with your account to enjoy high-definition videos (depending on your bandwidth) from the comfort of your couch through Wii U!

Netflix on PlayStation 3

Step 1: Follow the instructions above using unblock-us.com to access a Netflix account. The DNS settings listed below can be input to your router, for the entire network, or directly to your PS3 through Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection > Custom > DNS Settings. You won’t need to change the DNS settings on your PS3 if you have already done so via your router.

  • Primary DNS: 111.118.175.56
  • Secondary DNS: 118.127.33.48

Step 2: Next, you’ll need a US PSN account. Sign up for an America account here.

Step 3: Create a new user on your PS3, and associate your new American PSN account — if this sounds like cause for confusion, consider calling it "Netflix", or "do you want cheese with that" to easily remember which is the American account.

Step 4: To install Netflix on your Australian PlayStation 3, open ps3.unblock-us.com on your PS3 browser while logged in to your US PSN account.

Step 5: Launch Netflix and sign in with your account to enjoy high-definition videos (depending on your bandwidth) from the comfort of your couch through PlayStation 3!

Netflix on Xbox 360

Step 1: Follow the instructions above using unblock-us.com to access a Netflix account. The DNS settings listed below can be input to your router, for the entire network, or directly to your Xbox 360 through Settings > Network > Wired/Wireless Connection > Configure Network > DNS Server. You won’t need to change the DNS settings on your Xbox 360 if you have already done so via your router.

  • Primary DNS: 111.118.175.56
  • Secondary DNS: 118.127.33.48

Step 2: Set up a US Xbox 360 account. Create a free Xbox Live account and input a fake North American address. It does not require Xbox Live Gold.

Step 3: Download the Netflix app using your new US account.

Step 4: Restart your Xbox 360 — this will solve any lingering issues from the new DNS or switch to US account.

Step 5: Launch Netflix and sign in with your account to enjoy high-definition videos (depending on your bandwidth) from the comfort of your couch through Xbox 360!

Awesome. I signed up yesterday through Google Chrome and the Hola Unblocker, but I'd much rather watch stuff in the lounge room.
I was wondering if I could get it to work on the Wii U. I will try this! Thanks!
I just have my computer hooked up to my tv via an RGB cable. No need to pay for Unblock-US.

yep, same as i do it, with hola and watch either thru chrome or fire fox.. :)
How much does Unblock-US affect internet speed compared to other programs like that?
I used one a few months back and geo-blocked videos took forever to stream.
It wont accept my credit card.
found hola unblocker about a moth ago its an amazing extension fingers crossed they dont get rid of it

Don't worry, you'll be ok. Netflix doesn't care where the money comes from and the studios that do care would have no idea.
Interesting. What are the load times of videos? :O
Got it working perfectly on my Wii U, and I've been watching shows all night. Short load time upfront, then almost no buffering at all during playback. It's fantastic.
And that's on a regular connection.
Can I sign up on my PC/Mac using Hola, then log in on my PS3 with the account without using unblock me?
Funny how you have to "exploit" the system to be able to access a paid service, why don't they just give us access normally. If it was a few simple clicks and a signup on the Wii without having to bypass anything I'd probably go for it.

Licensing. All the content has to go to the Aussie classification board to get rated. This cost money. Plus our local stations pay money to get these series aired here to have adds placed in them. People wouldn't watch the free to air showing if they could stream the show online. Also who would continue to have and pay for Foxtels expensive service if they could have Netflix for a paltry $15 a month.
I've signed up for the trial but nothing looks new in new releases...

Where's Jack Reacher, Skyfall, Batman Rises, Gangster Squad?

Or have I got the wrong impression?...

Hulu appears to have more new tv releases...
cant seem to get it to take my credit card,

tried 0 at front and back of postcode

any ideas
Can't see me continuing post the 1 month trial, the pc selections are terrible not sure if you get more releases on the PS3/Xbox or not.
It shits me that this isn't available in Australia.

I think the library is just one library.
That was easier than expected
watched a movie called Noobz was silly but ok

The libraries are different per country. If you want more movies, change unblock-us to Canada and access the Canadian Netflix.

It's not the ultimate video streaming its made out to be. For $8 you don't get the absolute new releases.

Try in a new browser or with a US zip code.

I don't have the greatest internet, but streams perfectly fine. Quality adjusts to your speed so occasionally it just drops in quality for a few seconds, but then goes back up to HD.

Im more was more concerned with google blocking hola from chrome, but i guess there is always firefox if that happens
this is pretty cool but i'd much rather watch things in the lounge, even though I dont watch many shows [MOG]

I notice in peoples feed back on some tv shows that they dont have all episodes of them.. strange..

Did the same to me even with a US postcode.

I hear if you try it a few times it'll eventually accept it.

I did it half a dozen times than thought it was best not too fiddle with it too much more.

It is generally a season behind when it comes to tv.
yeah but that happens with the older shows too
Well this prompted me to join quickflix in the end, 2 month free trial includes blu rays and video streams
So I put the DNS into my WiiU, but on the Unblock-Us homepage it just says "Your computer is running Unknown" and doesn't go past stage 2. [Shifty]
I wonder if there is a way for use with your iPhone, then that way I could stream direct to my apple tv

Should still work.

Need some advise. I have a netflix account that works on my macbook using hola. But I want to watch it on the wii so we cna watch on the big tv. I have a proxy in the wii setup and the wii can connect to the internet but when I try to start up netflix it can't connect. What should I do next. I have updated the wii software and uninstalled and reinstalled netflix on the wii. Any suggestions what to do next? Oh I am in Australia.
does any one know if you can watch this on your ipad 3 etc?
This app works perfectly on my PC, didn't know this was even possible. Awesome.

Have you tried setting up unblockus on your router instead of directly on the Wii?
unblock is not a good solution, because it does not encrypt your data, so essentially, all your info will be visible to them..

a better solution is to use a vpn, because it is much more secure and the traffic is encrypted. you def wont want to lose private data on watching movies.

im using hmy hidemyass.com/... , so far it works for me fine and it is easy to setup. 5 minutes and you are watching netflix. ;)
