Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - Crucial combat tips

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a hard game until you master the unique controls. It does a terrible job of explaining what is actually an intuitive combat system to the point of potentially turning you off.

If you’re struggling, don’t give in! Try these combat tips.

Actually learn how to parry

Parrying is everything in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and yet it does an abysmal job of actually explaining how to do it. The on-screen tutorial suggests you need to use the left stick and X (360) or Square (PS3) but it doesn’t actually teach you how to do it.

The Blade Wolf, in particular, is a make or break moment. It’s really early on and unless you get lucky, you’re going to need to keep retrying until parrying just clicks. Once it does, Revengeance is great fun, but before then it’s a frustrating nightmare.

Using an Xbox 360 controller, wait until your enemy is just about to attack and and starts to glow red. At this moment, press the left control stick towards them simultaneously with the X button. Raiden will counter-attack if your timing is spot on, or otherwise defensively parry the incoming strike and take no damage.

DON’T hold the control stick towards your enemy. It needs to be pushed towards them each time they are about to attack, not held in their direction.

Use the lock-on feature

Another unexplained total game-changer is the lock-on feature. The right bumper on Xbox 360 locks-on to Raiden’s current enemy -- particular useful in the aforementioned Blade Wolf fight. More importantly, it controls the camera which can otherwise become sporadic and cause you to lose your bearings.

Stash health packs

Raiden can have one item equipped to use by pressing down on the D-Pad. This can be any number of things, but if you’re finding yourself in need of health, ensure it’s always a health supply. Play is paused while you’re switching between items; however, once combat has been instigated, you’re stuck with the item currently equipped.

To avoid any untimely deaths, ensure it is always set to a health pack. Just in case.

There is dodge combo, kind of

As usual, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance doesn’t really explain any of the combat upgrades, but asks you to do them anyway. The most useful expands your parry, and requires you to press control stick towards enemy + A + X (360). If done right, Raiden will side-step his opponent, rather than block and jump backwards. This leaves your overcommitted enemy vulnerable to attack.

Move the camera in Blade Mode

Blade Mode gives your right thumb a serious workout and is one of the most exciting features of the game. But while you’re slashing away with the right analogue stuck, don’t forget about the left one. Moving it will slowly move the camera, allowing Raiden’s vicious strikes to hit more of his enemy.

It’s also crucial if you’re targeting a specific part of your enemy -- such as the all important left hands.

Visor mode would be handy

A world of hidden items can be uncovered by pressing up on the D-Pad and switching to visor/scanning mode.

That’s right, you guessed it. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance doesn’t bother to mention it during normal gameplay when you actually might like to use it. Huzzah!

Zandatsu those spins!

Once you get into Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, ingesting cyborg spins will become second nature (I sure hope you know something about the game before reading that). Once you enter Blade Mode, slice through the red “Zandatsu box” and hit the B button when prompted to increase your health and fill your BP (currency) meter.

You also want to steal the left arm of applicable opponents by cutting through the blue line on said arm. Once you get really good, you’ll be able to do both in one clean cut!

Good write up dude, much needed for a game like this. Parrying isn't explained very well in game.
you mean spines? and the game explains visor mode, doktor explains it in one of the vr training missions and im pretty sure boris mentions it as well

and you dont just have to use the right stick for blade mode, x & y do horizontal and vertical slices

"Not explained in campaign"

Not counting VR missions. You shouldn't have to to quit and do extensive tutorials to learn about a key feature.
