Now that 2013 is upon us (and here's to an awesome lineup of 2013 games), it's time to reflect and award the best of 2012.

We put it to MMGN.com's community to vote for the best games of 2012, and here is the distinguished list. Did your favourite game/s win?

What our review said:

Far Cry 3 builds on its predecessors with a massive, engaging game world and the lure of unpredictability. Jason Brody begins life as a whimpering tourist afraid to fend for his life and develops into the deadly survivor he needs to become. The topical island paradise comes alive with deadly creatures, impromptu firefights and a host of unstable characters. Far Cry 3 is an exciting adventure in one of the most satisfying open worlds I’ve had the pleasure of exploring this year.

What our review said:

Assassin’s Creed III is undoubtedly the best in the series and revitalises everything about Assassin’s Creed that was starting to age prematurely. Connor has a fantastic story to tell, and in many ways is a more enjoyable protagonist to control; against the backdrop of the American Revolution, there’s a vibrant world full of burgeoning cities, untouched wilderness and raging seas to explore. There are a few little issues that suggest the execution isn’t perfect, but nothing that will discourage fans from enjoying one of the best games 2012 has to offer. This is the revolution that Assassin’s Creed has been waiting for.

What our review said:

Is Mass Effect 3 a good way to finish the trilogy? Looking over the game in its entirety, it certainly is. The focus on "galactic readiness" is an evolution of the relationship system that helps define the series, while a stronger focus on action, a deeper customisation system and compelling narrative make for a memorable experience. The ending is one of passionate debate at the moment, but it's relative to the player and how they've directed the experience. Does any possibile disappointment in the ending justify disapproval? No, because there's far too much to love about the experience. The Milky Way is at your disposal, and the conclusion can happen in any number of ways. It's your galaxy for the taking!

What our review said:

Fifa 13 refines the massive overhaul of last year’s game and adds a sense of unpredictability that comes from natural movement and realistic errors. Real world players make mistakes, and thanks to the First Touch System, so do Fifa 13 players. The learning curve is handled beautifully by the Skill Games, and once you make the switch, it’s impossible to go back to Fifa 12. With a range of subtle refinements to the presentation and popular gameplay modes, Fifa 13 is the best soccer game on the market, and well worth the upgrade for any Fifa fan.

What our review said:

Need for Speed: Most Wanted is a high-octane delight full of motoring mayhem, a vibrant landscape and the prefect garage for an arcade racer. With a fantastic competitive streak, thanks to the refined Autlogo system that compares your every move against your friends, its biggest fault is a confusing name. Criterion knows what it’s trying to achieve and goes back to basics with fast cars and intense collisions. The influence of Burnout is evident at every turn, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What our review said:

Treyarch promised a lot of change and innovation, and for the most part it’s kept its commitment to keeping the experience fresh and enjoyable. Sure, the game feels the same, but new additions do a good job of separating it from its predecessors. The multiplayer is still spectacularly fast and explosive, and the Pick 10 system is a cool new way to engage with the component, despite its obvious similarities to previous loadouts systems. Does Black Ops 2 offer enough change to persuade the naysayers to return to the Call Of Duty series? Probably not, but it does enough to keep the faithful coming back, and there’s enough originality and new ideas here to tide the fanatics over until the inevitable 2013 release.

What our review said:

I like what Game Freak has done with Pokémon Black and White 2, and it’s unequivocally a new adventure that improves on its predecessor. However, it’s not that much of a stretch from the “enhanced” version of each of the previous instalments and arguably missed an opportunity to revitalise the series. Nevertheless, fans know what they’re signing up for with a new Pokémon game and Black and White 2 will not disappointment. Catch ‘Em All for a second time.

What our review said:

Upon the completion of Journey, I simply sat back on my couch and contemplated the events that had just unfolded. Unlike other games that have a clear goal, story and conclusion, Journey let the player create their own story, taking in tidbits given out via our own interpretation of glyphs presented to us as we progress. It is through this innovative notion that Journey remains a mystery; a personal experience that is going to be completely different for everyone. If you own a PS3 and you don't believe video games can be art, then you simply need to play five minutes of this fantastic quest to see that you are wrong.

Someone failed with the banner [MOG]

Terrible year all around [MOG]
Not feelin' Mass Effect 3 for RPG category. I also feel Halo 4 definitely should have won the multiplayer category. Journey deserves its win, though.
what's wrong with the banners? >_<
Borderlands 2 better than both ME 3 (as RPG) and FC3 (as shooter and GOTY) for me, although FC3 and BL2 are quite close.

Otherwise, a very agreeable list of GOTY titles, so the community has done well. :)

Wrong year.
All fail -_-
The correct RPG won.

Excellent.
Thanks for the 2013 correction, we live in the future, so we get that wrong some times...
Would have liked to have seen The Walking Dead do better.
Far Cry 3 really people...
Sub par choice in my opinion
Why do all the first few names have a 3 in them? o.O
We should do worsts as well. Just change best rpg to worst ending and nothing would have changed.
This sounds about right (:
Most Wanted best racer?

It'd be great for this year if we could have a say on what titles should be in the list or give us the list before you make it official before we start voting. Another would be to add only the best reviewed games to the list (the best on mmgn)

Yup. I noticed a bunch of "X should be included" posts, and some late additions and whatnot. It's just messy.

I was thinking this lol.

I was a bit disappointed DayZ was not on the list, from memory that was this year albeit very early. Definitely my favourite game this year despite being a mod and also in Alpha testing phase. Kind of amusingly kept my attention so much longer than anything else.
all casual shit, pretty dissapointed
nfs best racer?!? that game should of been aborted at conception. terrible. farcry 3 taking 2 spots? that game was OK at best. the idea was good, but playing it wasnt. and no borderlaands 2? [Facepalm] worst list ever imo haha
