‘Next gen consoles are overdue, tablets catching up’ - Crytek

We can’t comment on or even speculate as to when, or if, the next generation will be announced. But we think that it’s time for the next generation and we think that it’s overdue already.”

The Crytek CEO also painted tablet devices as a very real threat to console specs, “The current generations are drying out and the longer we wait for the next generation of consoles, the higher the likelihood that they could fall behind tablets in terms of being the first thing people reach for when the time comes to play games.”

“Tablets are putting pressure on the gaming industry, and taking over in some ways, so that should be kept in mind.”

Interesting.

Thoughts? Funny that they praise Wii U as "powerful" and then say this...

I think tablets are potentially very powerful gaming devices. I know there is Apple hate here but holy jeebus there are some great games on there. Eurfloria is like the perfect game for iPad.

I don't think it will ever "take over", but consider how publishers are monetising the digital audience with tablets, in that they can easily distribute games at cheap prices and small download sizes. It's certainly threatening, and could potentially sway how Microsoft, Sony go with their next consoles. Microsoft is already going in that direction with SmartGlass.
When you think about it tablets have already surpassed current gen consoles, you get quad core tablets with over a GB of RAM and those specs alone demolish the 360.

I think they are due about now, so considering there is no announcement, they are overdue.
I just think tablets are only for casual games. Even games like dead trigger or dead space still feels casual like, not huge levels not really that in depth. But in my opinion Microsoft and Sony better not wait too long after the wii U is released, they will loose out IMO
Please for the love of god do not encourage tablet game as a stand alone platform. A combination experience like the Wii U and that thing Microsoft is trying to do where they are ripping off Nintendo's idea, those sound interesting and will most likely work but playing a game by just scratching away at a screen and twirling it around in the air is about as entertaining as getting your teeth pulled..................out trough your arse!
I need next-generation gaming asap, the potential is looking great, but it's just a matter of when..

I'm guessing we'll get a few hints early 2013..?
I'd give up on gaming if it went to tablets.
if that happens we would all have to go underground and form a non-tablet based video game system which we then sell on our newly formed black market

I guess you'll be giving up then...

I'd give up if it were only tablets.

I don't mind iPhone/Pad for 10 minute bursts, but I'm not playing a 20 hour game on a tablet.

You really think tablets will take over from consoles?

I don't understand why we can't have all. Handheld, console and PC have all worked together hand in hand for decades, why do we have to change? Why can't we have all?

To me, as a device, tablet is no different to a console. They are expensive and can't be upgraded like a PC. It also is dependent on battery life. The only plus side is you can take it everywhere. But the cons greatly outway the pros.

This.. pC will never die

It won't happen unless tablets have equal power to home consoles or PC's. Even then, just having a touch screen as a controller? No thank you.

Couldn't agree more. How much power do you really need to play Angry Birds anyhow?
I believe that there is still atleast 3 years on the current gen consoles!!! Early for next gen IMO

I don't think they'll take over. I think many people here hate on tablets simply because Apple dominates the market. It's an anti-Apple thing.

I think that potentially tablets can be used to great extents. The industry has changed in a way where the traditional controller is too intimidating for your casual user, and to expect platform holders to only make hardware for hardware gamers is a very risky thing to do.

The reality is that, as we see with Wii U, SmartGlass, tablets can offer many different things that controllers can't. I mean, what's stopping all of the buttons on a controller being replicated on a touch-screen?

I just think that in 20-30 years time we'll look back at the Xbox 360 controller and think, "What a monstrosity". I'm just open to things. I don't think tablets "will take over". I just think they'll have more relevance. Just as motion controls will. Nothing will ever take over from the traditional ways we interact with games. I guess it's just the cosmetic appearance will change.

That's my opinion anyway *shrugs*
Skynet will fix the tablet/mobile gaming BS that developers are going on and on about.

inorite *nods*
Yeah, personally I think anyone who disregards tablets as a viable mobile gaming solution has their heads in the sand. While it will never live up to a controller, touch interfaces are geting more accurate every year, and it's inevitable that someone will release a standard bluetooth controller that will work with Android and Apple that becomes the gold standard for devs who want to make "real games".

This time I don't think it has anything to do with Apple many of generally hate on touch screen gaming regardless if it's running on Apple, Android or Windows. Gaming needs physical feedback and tablets and phones don't do that, the fighting games that get ported over to phones and tablets look fantastic but they play like AIDs, seriously how the hell do you do a traditional Hadoken by squiggling on a screen, even worse you are squiggling on a screen that you are trying to view the game on.

I love how set on this opinion you are. Let me combine something you said in the first post with a sentence to try and explain why that is just not going to happen:

"I can't wait for the weekend, I'm going to kick back and play some Eurfloria"

Now tell me dude, can you EVER imagine someone saying that? More specifically can you imagine a gamer, the core driving force of this industry, saying that?

Yes, casual games are the fastest growing market, yes tablets are catering for this and combining for unprecedented sales, but there is a problem with that - it's a ****ing fad. A consumer trend. It will not be sustainable, not like real gamers are.

This community is built around real gamers, people who live and breathe this hobby because they love it. You will not get that kind of passion from a casual gamer, they by definition give precisely no ****s about gaming; it's simply a passtime just as easily replaced with something else. Hence casual. Fickle. Not going to stick with it.

It will pass.

And this is nothing to do with Apple. I hate Apple, but in terms of phones and tablets, that would be my choice without a doubt. Having gone from an iPhone to a Galaxy S2 and having used a Galaxy Tab against an iPad... (not sure which it was, all look the ****in same) I can see that choice would be a no brainer too. Apple do that shit well, and they do have a hardware and innovation edge which is what would be needed, but the device and everything about it is why it will not work, not the company making it.

well said @Skarteh there is no way that tablets and phones will take gaming away from PC and consoles
The reason tablets will never *take over* is because of the short development cycle on the majority of games. Very, VERY few studios put the same amount of effort into optimisation on tablet-based games as some developers do on console.

Meaning, because the tablets are all so saturated with apps, the percentage of highly-polished titles is considerably lower than console, where maybe 5-10% of games are polished enough to have, say 75% or higher on metacritic.

I doubt much will change this way, either. Way would a studio put so much effort into optimising a tablet game when another developer might have a similar idea and release it first? It doesn't make sense.

"Core" gamers, however, want the epic adventures with few bugs and fifty-hour campaigns, shiny visuals and 60FPS. If someone could show me a game like this on the iPad, I'd be both surprised and impressed.
