External HDD for PS3 from Mac?

Hey all.

Recently bought an external 1TB HDD to store all my junk on there, but I'm having trouble making it be read by the PS3. It just doesn't appear anywhere on it. What am I doing wrong?

I'm using Mac OSX 10.6.4. The HDD is a WD Elements SE 1TB.

Any help will be appreciated. :)

Any tips on how I go about making my HDD a FAT32?

Finder > applications > utilities > Disk Utility,

then select your HD, then go to the erase tab, the change format to MSDOS (FAT) then click erase. and tadaa.

note that this formats everything on your hd so u will have to start over :D and nothing over 4 gig will transfer

lol is your hd full? 22hours seems like alot, but 1 TB is alot of information to get rid of :O

not sure if this will work, but maybe delete whats on the HD first then format. thats what i would try

I had like..3 files on there. Not even 1GBs worth. Brand new HDD I bought today. I'll stop the process and delete those three and try again.

ummm make sure u chose the right hard drive, not your macintosh HD cause that would be bad :(

Well it worked. Put it as the (FAT) format, put files on and it worked. Except the video couldn't be read. -_-

What file types does the PS3 accept?

pretty much just avi's... maybe mp4...

edit. if u have wifi set up then u can stream from your mac to ur ps3using software called MediaLink. once its all sorted on your mac and ps3 you can access pretty much all your multimedia over your network. i set mine up using a demo and it worked, but my mac mini is using my loungeroom TV so i dont really use it

My .avi files wouldn't work. It says it is unsupported, or something. :S

So, I'll need to convert everything to be compatible with the PS3, yes? Then are those files compatible on Mac's Quicktime or Windows Media Player?

dont use quicktime, its RUBBISH... get VLC. not sure if it will play on quicktime, probably not because its so crap. but vlc playing everything

@Coffey - Hmm, I shall have to then. But I liked Quicktime because it's the default program, and yeah. So, in the future, when I download something, I should convert it to the PS3 format so they play on my PS3, then use VLC on my MacBook Pro to play them on there?

@Mik3y - I don't know what that is, lol. :S

But I tried streaming, but it was buggy and overall didn't work well.

@Coffey - Just read your edit, so can they stream off the HDD that's plugged into the Mac? :O

I can't find the folders I want to access with that program. :S

@Coffey - I tried that, the only thing about it is it's restricted to 30 minutes. :(

So, should I convert them all into .mp4 files then? And get VLC for my Mac to play them? Does converting them screw with the quality(mainly video picture and subtitles)? :O

all depends on what you do when you convert them. a straight avi to mp4 shouldnt affect subs but the picture quality might drop a little. all depends on ur settings.

id rather not convert them. just watch AB on ur mac.

Hmm, I see. I'd rather make them all compatible with the PS3 instead of some working and some not. But then at the same time, I'd rather not have to fuss around and convert them. =_=

When you say "drop a little", is that difference even noticeable? :O
