Forget what you know about Lara Croft. As of today, all that is changing.

After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive'

Here begins the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which charts the journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.

-Lara is 21 in this game

-It's not only a reboot of the franchise but a reboot of the entire brand. As a result there will be no "real" Lara model this time.

I've never been interested in tomb Raider cos of the movies...and angelina jolie. I hate her.

this sounds pretty interesting though and the character looks nothing like it could be jolie.

Damn, a little disappointment. Perhaps it was the actual size before being enhanced?? It may grow over the future sequels. ;)

I also remember when CD boasted how TR:U will be the best ever.....best ever failed promise is all I played!

Yeah, Underworld didn't go so well... lolololol, this one looks very promising though =D

Like it's staying true to the classics, and not cloning Uncharted.

Patience, we've seen nothing yet. You might actually like how the new gameplay works. We'll just have to wait and see early next year.

I had to giggle when I read the thread title. Tomb Raider 9. She just keeps on coming on 'ol Lara. I enjoy all the tomb raider series, cannot help feel Uncharted stole some of Miss Crofts fame away.

Many people / husbands out there will still buy Tomb Raider, she is part of the gaming force I seriously know of relationships Lara has almost broken up due to her...let's say slighter than normal curves. Wifes threatening to leave their husbands if they continued playing rather than spend time with them.

True story.

As everything does, Lara eventually lost steam. Her games suffered, her brand capital diminished, and her reign eventually came to an end. Crystal Dynamics managed to halt the franchise's steady decline with a trilogy bold releases, but even the studio recognized that Lara hadn't evolved with the times. Lara Croft had become an empty idea. New and substantial leads had tisen to take her place who didn't need unlockable *something* to gamer attention. With the industry evolving and demanding meaningful experiences, Crystal knew it was at a crossroads.

The decision to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise through an origin story wasn't so much a choice as an act of necessity. "Iconic characters, wether they are heroic or not, are obvious *something* of their time," says Timothy Longo Jr., franchise director at Crystal Dynamics. "Specifically with franchises, they need to evolve with the times. When they don't you can tell. They will fail. Crystal was bold in saying "We have to something big. Something different."

How exactly to implement that reboot, though, was another issue entirely. When researching potential avenues for the redesign, careful examination of the character yielded a recurring sentiment. Lara's biggest downfall was her Teflon coating. The nonstick surface may have worried an age of superficial fun, but when no amount of physical exertion, pain, or heartache would break through Lara's veneer, it further condemned her as a character of style without substance. Crystal realized it need a new younger Lara. A human Lara - one the players would identify with and care about.

"This is a survival story. This is an origin story." Longo continues. "Our goal is to take a very human and relatable character, and break her down before we rebuild her - to put her through survival challenges and have her come out a changed person, someone the play will relate to." Crystal Dynamics set out to craft a character not as a sex symbol or an ode to empowerment, but an entirely new Lara Croft born out of something we've never seen before.

Desperation.

To build Lara Croft into a culturally relevant hero worth of the attention that once came so effortlessly, Crystal must break her first. The Lara isn't a shadow of her predecessors, nor the game a precursor to her later adventures. While she echos the intelligence, strength, and beauty of Teflon Lara, she is a woman all her own. This Lara won't be invincible. She bleeds and bruises, trembles and cries, but ultimately pushes forward. Her coy and knowing smile may have been replaced with a grimace of pain and fear but it's all part of the process.
