Playstation 2 Aspect Ratio Issues

Hey i was given probably 4 months ago a perfectly good working old-school phat Ps2. First Ps2 console to call my own lol, tho everyone i know had one so when the Ps2 was the 'big thing' i was easily able to play most of the best games on the console. Feeling a little nostalgic through the latest big EB Games sale, i purchased the original God of War and Devil May Cry. I lent God of War to a friend and im playing through DMC but its having strange issue with the aspect ratio. It keeps changing, all the time. It'll go from 16:9, to 4:3 letterbox, to 14:9 zoomed, and it'll change constantly during gameplay. Its obviously annoying as all hell. I'm only running composite into an older 42" plasma i'm using atm so im not sure exactly what settings i need to modify or what i need to do to stop it.

Ive really never heard of this happening. The only thing I can think of is to turn on the ps2 without a disk in, then go through the settings and change it to 16:9. Other than that Ive got no idea.

Very occasionally, maybe 3-4 times since i've had it, the entire image will squish into the top 1/5th of the screen too, with a green tinge to it. I know theres nothing wrong with the TV, i play dvds, wii games and watch TV through it no worries in 16:9. I did hear Ledski that the 16:9 ratio Ps2 option is for DVDs only but im not sure. Perhaps the Ps2 is slightly faulty?
