Guide to Replace PS3 Laser Lens

76588 Views 121 Posts Playstation 3 Hardware
This guide is for those unlucky fews that have their ps3 optical drive died (including me). This will be useful for those that don't want to use the ps3 warranty claim or don't have warranty anymore.
Equipment required to do this:
1. Torx / flat head screwdriver
2. Phillips head screw driver
3. PS3 Laser KEM-400AAA, which you can buy from ebay / www.modsupplier.com/

Fist I would like to say that I composes this guide based on my personal experience and the guides from: www.llamma.com/ & progamer.cc/

Procedures:
1. Follow the first 6 steps from www.llamma.com/
2. Follow the first 2 steps from progamer.cc/
3. Remove the screws (highlighted in red) and remove the cables (highlighted in blue)
4. Removing the metal plate of the ps3 bluray drive to get to the drive
5. Then remove more screws as seen in the picture
6. Open the drive to reveal the laser lens mechanism
-- to be continued
Good guide man, hopefully i'll never have to use it..although i don't mind fiddling around
-- continued
7. Finally remove the laser mechanism screws and cables

Using this guide and a little common sense should allow you to replace the laser lens.

Note: the pictures were edited from progamer.cc/

To admin: it would be great if you can put this in the guide section.
well i'm one of the unfortunate few........just posted my unit back to sony today to get the lens replaced under waranty, says it'll be 15-20 working days before i get it back, and thats only after they physically receive it from australia post (which could take 4 days or so)!!!

Well, if you do it yourself, it will be much faster, maybe about 1 week to wait for your laser lens order and about 30 mins to install it. Although there is always a chance that you may damage your ps3, the warranty claim is definitely the safer option.
How does the Blu-ray drive fail more easily? Playing games and movies more often than usual?

And the warranty lasts for one year hey? Or less for the drive itself?
Cool guide. What is that Multi Zone sticker? Is that on the actual console?
many of the 40gig consoles seem to be more susceptible to drive failure, luckily i couldn't wait and i got the 60 gig model, but I'd be prepared to change the drive myself seeing as many people on myps3 have sent theirs back and it's taken 4-6 weeks.

Nice guide Bun Di
Wouldn't it be easier safer and probably cheaper to just whack a new blu ray drive in it? US$90 for the lens assembly. Somone mentioned on another thread here you can get a replacement drive for $110 ($Aus I expect too).
hardly any ps3 consoles break down ..so no major issue...less than 2% of ps3 go in for repair
all i see is multizone, multizone, multizone lol

ive seen it been done and its not hard at all.....its just all a bunch of screwing and unscrewing screws as shown.....easier than lego !

Not sure how but it started with freezes in the game then one day my ps3 just stop reading any discs.

It's not in my console.

This is as close as whacking a new bluray drive as you can get. This method will cost about $AUD 50-60. Look for the ps3 laser lens from ebay. Though, yes it's safer to do a warranty claim, but i reckon this is not hard to do.
Excellent guide mate, this should be added to the guides section.
mmm tempting to do it considering mine just died.

but... i'll just let sony handle this one
If your PS3 is out of warranty, how much will it cost to get your BD Drive fixed? By Sony? By a unofficial fixer?

I heard it's about $AUD150 by unofficial fixer or by sony. I think Speedoponi just did his for $150 by an unofficial fixer.
I need to get the four big head screws which lock the laser into place. Anybody have any idea where I can order these?
Hey guys, my blu ray drive failed to readan discs aswell.
i have the 40GB version, will this model work on it?

thanks
????????????????
anyone??
yes it will...all ps3's use the same lens
OK, what screw sizes would open the 4 metal screwsthat secure the lens??

thanks
anyone????
