Japanese Consoles/Australian Games

Hey Guys,

im considering in purchasing a PS3 console from japan but im a little hesitate coz of the risks involved as i do not know whether it will work back home in Australia. Just wondering if anyone could help me out and clarify my queries.

1. Will the Japanese PS3 console work in Oz? do i need a transformer coz i know that in japan they use 110v and in Oz we use 220v?

2. does it have the option of English menu's?

3. will Australian blu-ray dvd's work on the japanese ps3 console?

4. will australian ps3 games work on the ps3 japanese console?

5. do i need additional cables or plugs in order for the ps3 japanese console to work in Oz.

if you could help us out it would be cool.

1. Yes, think you need a converter or a new power lead, think it uses same power lead as a PC.

2. Not sure.

3. Region coded aussie blu-rays wont but alot of them are region free, they just dont tell you.

4. Yes

5. Just the new power lead.

Others issues to keep in mind, PAL region PS2 games wont work if it is a PS3 with backwards compatibility, PAL PS1 games wont work, Region 4 DVDs wont work & SONY Australia will not fix it under warranty & SONY Japan will not let you send it to them if you aint in Japan.

1. will work with a transformer
2. English menus are an option
3. Aust. Blu Rays will not work
4. Aust. games will work on the Japanese console
5. No standard HDMI or RCA connection will work.
1. yes it will work, no transformer needed
2. not sure. i'd say its in english
3. no. blu-rays are region locked
4. yes. all games are region free
5. dont think so. should all be there
Ha, we posted at the same time crazy. Howel I don't think it is worth buying from overseas. What sort of $$$ savings are we talking about.

thats true. also you will have no warranty in Aus if its from over seas
but they have white ones!!!
Wii's are white...YUK
SO you're saying that all cables are included and theres no need to purchase new ones but if i do i can just unplug my my power lead from my PC and plug it straight into the PS3 console and it will work fine without a transformer?

the ps3 consoles cost around 650-750 here in Oz but in Osaka, Japan they cost 39 500 yen which is around 400 bucks. big savings i think. and also have the option of colours like white, black or grey
Not at all, you will need a step down transformer to allow you to use a 110 volt device on our 240 volt supply.

It is totally up to you but does the cost of postage, the transformer, lack of Blu Ray support (our region) and no warranty really equal a $300 saving??

You don't need a step-down, because PS3's power is universal.

yeah bur PS3's are sexy oooh white!!
i thought they were multi voltage or something, just read that on here a few times. ps3 dont come with a HDMI cable so you will need to buy one of them eitherway if you need it. $300 dollar saving, take postage out of that say 50? so 250 maybe and no warranty... so when your ps3 dies in a year you gotta buy a new one or repair it. and it does happen, there have been a few ppl on here who's ps3's have died

I stand corrected and have learnt something, sorry to inform incorrectly howel.
You're correct! PS3's are indeed multi-voltage.

Answer to Question 2: is definitely 'YES'. It won't look any diferent from a PAL PS3.

If you're importing this, how much will that set you back? Must be atleast AU$100. IMO, the Silver doesn't look as impressive. The White looks better...but the Steel, I was left a little disappointed. (BTW, I seen all these for real).
the postage and handling wont cost me nothing coz i go to Japan alot for work. so everything is cool but i will need to buy a HDMI cable. all i want it for is games and if i need it for watching blu-ray dvds ill just get them in the states. so i dont need nothing i guess except for the hdmi cable. is this correct?
Good luck then!

And have a great trip
Yes! 100% correct!

thanks peoples
wait last question. whats the HDMI cable for? will i need that for the PS3 console or just to watch movies?
To do PS3's graphics/picture quality justice (games and movies).

PS3 on SDTV = useless

PS3 on HDTV via AV cables = PS2-like graphics = useless
only need it if you got a HDTV... lcd or something
Let me clear some things up for you, as I have actually personally bought one in Feb in Bic camera department store, Akiharbara, Tokyo.

1. You do NOT need a step up/down converter for the power supply, just use a pc power cable with the Australian pins, see picture below, they cost about 10 bucks. Even though the ps3 says its 110v- its actually a universal power supply, mines plugged straight into the wall.

2. It can have English menu's but you'll need to change them yourself, if having problems then consult google.

3. You cannot play Aussie blu-ray movies unless they are all region, check the back of the movie case for a logo with a,b,c. it will play American blu-rays but only Japanese DVD's

4. All current ps3 games are NOT region locked so work in any PS3 console from any region. COOL FEATURE!

5. About cables/plugs- see number 1 in my post and the picture below.

p.s. I bought a white ps3 40 gig for $400 plus an extra controller, 3 games and its still cheaper than here. They are made in Japan and not china, are put together better and don't seem to have as many failures as the Chinese versions. The only thing different is the Information Board will always be in Japanese and cannot be changed to another language, I just turn it off.
