I finally achieved the HDD swap last night and because of the limited space with posting a forum, I have put the instructions 'online'.
If you are interested in doing this swap yourself, it is pretty easy to do when you are ready for it, so be prepared is all I can say.
Check it out at.....

Sorry MyPS3, I wanted to post it here but didn't have enough room.
Thanks for the great service anyway!
oh im thinking 1 years down the track or even 6 months my HDD will be full....mmmmm time to get new one 1 terrabyte sounds good but what about Sony 10 year plan for PS3 a crap load of terrabytes i presume...More $$$$$ More HDD
mines only got 2000+ mb left... 13 demos, 300+songs, 20 videos, and a few game saves.... it dont go far does it?? (40gb)

Doesn't go far, does it stax28? That is why I hope this tutorial benefits many users. If you do the labor(free) then it is a cheap conversion really compared to say, getting someone at Sony to do it. I am sure that would REALLY p**s a lot of people off so at least they have thought about this drive swap when they designed the unit.
Love that photo man, looks like you were standing too close to a power point, classic!
sounds a bit fishy to me.
I did the HDD swap just fine. Having problems installing Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon though. It always freezes. I will try and install on lower resolution as I am guessing I am just maxing out the RAM
(bump)

here is the thread i was looking for. i need freya and parso's help.

Parso: next time ur around can you tell me.....did you have any traded games on your HDD aswell or had you only bought things yourself?

i just bought a 320g drive and im itching to get it going, but i have seriously received over 20 games from other people in trades, and if i have to go around to them all over again........
I have only had my PS3 for about 2 months.
If you have an ext HDD like say 200-500GB or 1TB, go to the SETTINGS column. Follow SYSTEM SETTINGS---> BACKUP DATA. Plug in your storage device like a large USB flash drive or ext. HDD and backup your data.
If you don't have the Ext. HDD of your own and your mate has one, borrow his as you only need it for a few hours.
When you get the PS3 to BACKUP the data, it backs up 'everything' from your PS3 HDD that is in the machine now. So when you go to restore the data, you restore it back to the NEW HDD that you have just put in the PS3. The PS3 will then look EXACTLY the same as when you first took out the old HDD.
Keep your old HDD for warranty and services as well. Don't sell it in other words.
I only had GTA4 as a game so therefore the 'gta4.exe' file that stays on your PS HDD (prob so it's a quicker load time from the games disc) was on the old HDD. This took up about a GB or more. All of your music, pics, vids, etc. are backed up in the BACKUP feature so you don't have to worry about them.
If you go to SYSTEM SETTINGS-->SYSTEM INFORMATION, it will tell you how much space the HDD has at the moment.
Probably the most important thing to have when you drive swapping is the latest firmware from Sony either stored on a USB flash drive OR your ext. HDD under the directory structure of PS3/UPDATE/...then place the .pup file in the UPDATE folder. All MUST be capital letters
Cheers!
oh ok so you didnt have any downloaded games on your HDD? so you cant help me.....dammit.

im almost positive i will have to go around and re-download all the PSN games again, mine AND my friends'......cos unless Freya can confirm that when he/she did it, there were traded games on their HDD aswell, im not gonna believe him/her either........so many people touting "facts" that they have no idea about really....i need the TRUTH, otherwise i could be without PJ Monsters, and a few of my other favourite games, for days/weeks or however long it takes to get in touch with all my previous traders

this is important, i have like 60 psn games in total

i'll give you a copy of my PJ:M if it stuff up ozchaps
hehe lol, thanks bro. all better now

You could buy the games your self, you know just a thought.

longarms said: you know you could buy the games your self, you know just a thought.

thats why i went and put $100 on my debit VISA today just incase lol

edit - although its not really the buying of the games that bothers me, its the downloading......especially at this point in the month. if it makes me go over my cap, the games might end up costing me the same as fully priced bluray games......not to mention the time wasted and the extra things i will have needed to download in the meantime like game/firmware updates etc
Sorry ozchap, misunderstood what info you were really after. I thought you just meant the 'data' for games you have already bought.
I was unsure about this topic as well until Freya told me that when you backup, it DOES backup EVERYTHING. That includes all game demos.
You just have to have the ext. HDD that will have enough space on it to store all of your data when you do the backup through the 'system backup'.
I was prepared to sacrifice the 10 or so games that I had downloaded but to my surprise, the games were on the NEW HDD when I 'restored' the data back onto the new PS3 HDD.
I have a new model(40GB) which is now a 295GB(350GB in reality) drive in mine. This IS a fact so just make sure you have a reliable ext. HDD to backup to(with the current firmware installed on it OR the firmware can be on a flash drive as well).
Cheers.
Thanks parso you have helped me to.
'ts all good mate.

these "10 or so games" you speak of......they were all demo's?
Ok guys and girls please use the new official HDD replacement thread thanks www.myps3.com.au/
