Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my 40GB PS3 to 500GB using a WD, Seagate or Fujitsu 500GB sata 2.5" drive. Has anybody come across a drive that doesn't work with the unit yet? Or is it pretty much plug n play, and off you go. I don't want to spend the cash to find it won't accept the drive! Excuse my ignorance, i'm new.

ive had issues with my seagate, so id scrap that one off the list maybe....otherwise i think as long as its a 2.5 inch SATA drive it will work
ok thanks for the reply
I have a 320GB Seagate in my PS3. No problems as of yet.
It's good to see Sony allowing upgrade of HDD without voiding warranty, and allowing you to use any standard sata laptop drive, it's a breath of fresh air.

Nike - Nothing's impossible!

Yeah, I may be holding out for that....or if they make the 0.5tb for under $100!?!
I really need one very soon, running out of space and frequently deleting Utility Installs!

havent seen any 1TB 2.5" drives yet and the 500GB is still costing ~$150 but it shouldnt be long before the 1TB is mainstream i dare say
Hey guys just went dont to the local comp store i can pick up a 500G seagate for $115, other than ozchap has anyone else had troubles, also ozchap what problems did you experience?
Sorry if this info is already in this thread but I'm in a rush to go out & cbf reading through 20 pages of posts.
If you decide to upgrade your HDD you may run into problems with restoring your old data - I did - my 40GB HDD backup file was 25GB & I stored it on an external HDD. After swapping my 40GB for the 500GB HDD I formatted the new HDD & then went to System Settings/ Backup Utility/ Restore & began the restore of my 40GB data from the external HDD. All appeared to be fine until the restore reached 100% & served me with an error code (80010029) & something about corrupted data After much googling I found a work around & diligence is key to this being successful. Depending on how large your restore file is it can take quite a while for a system restore (my 25GB worth took approx 45mins)- you must watch the restore process until it reaches 98 or 99% & press circle to cancel the restore. It sounds messed up but it works - all your system settings & game data will be restored, though I've read that you may have to reinstall some games, this won't affect your game saves. Don't freak out when your Trophy folder is empty - you just have to go online and re-sync your trophy data by checking your profile card. Apparently this restore error has been an issue since trophies were introduced & some newer games (saves) won't allow data copying - I think it's to prevent trophy cheats but sadly it effects the restore function. Hope this helps.
When changing over to a new hard drive I strongly suggest you delete everything that you can for clean install. Movies, music, PSN games, install data and all the stuff that you can get again easily enough. All I took over were my game saves, settings and a couple of themes.
wheres a good place to buy a hard drive?

Guyver has got the best idea here. If you have old copies of music, video, pics, etc. delete them all. Only keep your game demos when you do the backup(as Guyver mentions). Sync up with PSN to keep your trophies b4 removing the old HDD. Also keep that 40Gb drive safe as you need to put it back in the PS if it needs to be repaired by Sony. Shop around and make plenty of calls for a cheap price on a new HDD.
Confusing about your error Quicky, that isn't logged anywhere, even on this site.. www.myps3.com.au/
Strange.
If I was to upgrade my HD would I lose my SF4 data?

your save? no, just make sure you back up your ps3 HDD first, and also make another backup of your game saves onto a usb. thats what i did, helped big time

Yes save, but you can't backup the save to usb. I tried

Yeah u can, i did
I did what Guyver said and what tommo said and I didn't lose any game saves or trophies or anything - that is, once I found the 'work around' for the restore error I kept getting.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that you will need the latest firmware update on a usb stick for when you put the new HDD in.

huh? I'll try again later tonight
Yeah I know SFIV won't let you copy it manually but it was all restored from my backup file - I didn't end up needing to use any of the manually stored game saves on my usb stick because everything was restored from my backup file on my external HDD.
Woops sorry 3:16, im not to sure about SFIV.. i had already changed my HDD when i bought the game. I thought u were talking about saves in general, not specifically SFIV..
