PS3 Keeps Turning Off...Aaaaarrrgghh!!!

Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows what may be wrong with my console. Keeps just instantly switching off during play after after a few hours now. Never used to until couple of days ago, strangely around the time of latest firmware update.

Does not give warning, just turns off instantly leaving a flashing red light on console. Only way to get back on is switch off with rear switch and that somehow resets it to not flash and then I can turn it on as usual with controller ans play again.

I have checked settings and they are all fine. Have been playing GT5 and made sure that my user music was turned off as I have heard that was causing dramas with a lot of people.

It is an old 80gb fatty which I upgraded about 18 months ago with a 500gb hdd.

Any clues, really dont want to have to pay for a repair or buy a whole new console as I am already on my second one.

Probably overheating....
PM Vyma and he will fix the console for you or give you tips to see if it actually is overheating. Good luck man.

I can just write it here too.

I've actually got one with the same problem here right now.
Problem, turns off after a few hours. then won't restart until you turn it off at the switch. If you try and restart it straight away it will turn on then straight back off. You have to wait until the temp comes back down below 44degrees.

Solution, Complete dissamble and clean, renew thermal compound and replace with diamond Ic after a very quick reflow and then overriding the internal fan speed controller with my manual overide.

What happens is the internal fan controller becomes faulty, normally dust build up can fry it. So you have to either replace the motherboard (costly) or simply override it.

Cost to fix is $115 + postage.
Will come with 6month warranty.

Thanks VY, will probably be in touch shortly. Just gonna run a few more tests to make sure it is not just a GT5 problem. Just clocking up a few hours on some other games over the weekend to satisfy my curiosity.

Clock away. GT5 will stress the system out, making the problem more noticeable. black ops and MW2 and uncharted 2 are other ones with the same effect. Whereas GTA 4 is a LASER killer.

I know it's not terribly cheap, but it is the cheapest around. And you can rest assured it's thouroughly tested before I ship back to you with the warranty.
