PS3 Servicing... How often should it be done.

As most members are aware I have been repairing Ps3's for some time now with my business Console Pal.

It all started with a way of making profit from my hobby and being able to claim video games as a business deductions was all the motivation i needed.

People have asked over the years how often the should service their PS3's; if ever.

My general advice is every 6-12months is good to open the unit and clean out the dust and to renew the thermal compound yearly.

I service my own 60gb launch model every 3months, and by service I mean I strip it down, remove every trace of dust and renew the thermal compound with diamond IC. Whilst is probably isn't necessary to do it that often 4years later with over 50hrs a week of usage it is yet to die,albeit I have gone through 4 lasers in that time.

Recently I scored a large contract servicing and repairing consoles for a major rental company.

Working with rental consoles has opened my eyes to the abuse these console cop when they are not "owned" by the user.

These pictures are from the console this is on my workbench right now. Anyone care to guess what caused the the YLOD???







So with those pictures, I suppose you are all wondering our old the console is? well it is an 80gb model sent out for rent brand new in the box + a few "RENTAL CONSOLE STAMPS" only 6months ago. Thats right all that dust is from only 6months of use.

The renter lives in a new estate and the majority of the dust is from earthmoving around his house with a bit of cat hair thrown in. Cat's are notorious for sleeping on warm surfaces and the ps3 was this cat's favourite.

So I say to all those that are interested and have consoles that are passing the 1-2year or older mark. Spend the $35, get your console serviced by me and save it before it dies.
