Sony Hacker wants gamers to pay legal bills

"Media, I need your help. This is the first time I have ever asked. Please, if you support this cause, help me out and spread the word.

I want, by the time this goes to trial, to have Sony facing some of the hardest hitting lawyers in the business. Together, we can help fix the system."

...In the process Geohot has already racked up $10,000 in legal expense, and that figure looks set to continue rising. Now, he’s asking for the gaming community’s help to pay for his spiralling legal fees.

ORLY?? So tell me then, just what did he steal that makes him a thief??

Maybe not so much the literal sense of the word, but his actions are taking profit away from game developers, through lost game sales. He is one of those metaphorical thiefs :P.
thief [θiːf]
n pl thieves [θiːvz]
1. a person who steals something from another
2. (Law) Criminal law a person who commits theft

He may not have stole the PS3 devkit which was reverse engineered & unlocked the PS3 but the people that did gave him the code to release on the net which is much worse then just keeping it underground for the modding community.

In the future I can see the big companys coming together to crack down on jailbreaking & get the laws changed to fight piracy better atm there's too many loopholes.

The iPhone has shown potential as an open platform; the PS3 has shown potential as a major loss in the gaming industry. There's a difference.

This is true. The iPhone jailbreak is basically so people can share cool shit with one another... the PS3 jailbreak is so people can steal games.

Sorry man but you have no idea about ps3 jailbreak then.

I can play tales of vesperia in english instead of japanese on ps3 if i get jailbreak.
Besides you can steal games on iphone jailbreak.
The more these douchebags do unnecessary damage the more Sony will ruin there life, I hope these idiots think being bankrupt is worth all this trouble [Facepalm]

No, just no....and what the hell is a "metaphorical thief"? Either he stole something or he didn't. As far as I can tell, he's stolen nothing and he's not up on charges of theft. It's careless slander of that nature that gives people who don't know any better a bad impression of what he has done.

In fact GH Firmware did not enable anyone to use backups. That required the Level 2 Package. Why are you blaming GeoHot and not the author of THAT package?

Wow... the formation of uninformed opinions is just rife on these boards isn't it?

I know, it's amazing isn't it?

Want to know the really ironic thing about all of this?

The amount of press that Sony will get from all of this is far, far more valuable than the amount of money they will lose to the small number of pirates who will choose to stay disconnected from PSN in order to play pirated games.

The longer Sony can keep this in the media spotlight, the better off they are and the louder they will be laughing on the way to the bank.

Sony want this out of the spotlight ASAP. The more attention it gets, the more people will look up the hack and how to do it on their own PS3 ...
personally, Sony suing a hacker doesn't put me in the mood to buy a PS3.

What i mean by metaphorical thief is, he hasn't actually taken anything physical. But his actions have/will lead to profits being taken from Sony and game devs.

Heres a metaphorical example of this:
I see someone dropping a new scratchie ... I pick it up and dont tell them they dropped it. BAM! I win $25,000. Now I didn't steal $25,000 off them, but my actions have taken $25,000 that they could of had. (pretty good example)

If you approve of the hacking, thats fine ... you can donate.
I don't so I wont donate.

Hmm, not really the same. Not telling them they dropped it and taking it IS stealing regardless of how much it won.

what i was getting at :P
I didn't steal $25,000 off them, but i stole something that would of got them $25,000
But he DIDN'T. [Facepalm]
I think it's unfair to ask people to help out, but I'm sure he'll get the support he's after.

Certainly won't be getting a cent from me! You play with fire, you get burnt. It's the risk you take and he knew when he took it on that this could happen.

So suffer in ya jocks, man.
Just donated monies to Geohot.

Props to you S0NY.

And a big **** YOU to Ben for intentionally wording this to make Geohot sound like some scamming beggar. You know what I'm talking about.
And to all the rest of the people in this thread jumping on that bandwagon- wake up to yourselves. This threatens to set a precedent far greater than you seem to appreciate. If he gets screwed over in court, it will be a disgraceful injustice that may effectively outlaw a vast majority of console modifications - and all because he may be unable to afford the legal representation which Sony obviously can. Sony have had homes raided, personal equipment confiscated, computers searched, and even IPs of everyone who have accessed Geohot's site obtained (that includes a lot of us), for god only knows what reason. They're knee deep in shit and they're fighting dirty to get out of it- They deserve no respect nor support for this; Geohot needs all the help he can get.

GTFO [Rage]
Geohots does NOT deserve any support for the mess he's gotten himself into, He very well knew what he was doing and knew the consequenceses if he got caught, But even worse the lill bugger showboated and bragged about it. [Facepalm]

In my opinion he derserves full punishment and anyone who supports an donates money to the lill twat is a complete idiot. [Shifty]

As Leena said:

=_=
@puhm .. it is by no means an injustice. He broke the law, therefore Sony have every right to seek punishment. It would be a disgrace upon the 'justice system' if he got out of it on the basis of principals. It wouldn't matter if Sony was a criminal organisation ... attacking a criminal is still a crime.

sidenote: Sony didn't do anything illegal
If you buy a PS3 you should be able to do what you wish to it

Sony Hacker wants gamers to pay legal bills
It's basically the same principal as going out committing crimes (stealing cars, breaking and entering) and videoing yourself and putting it on the interwebz for all to see.

He deserves what he gets, in my opinion.

DK-maTTy said: If you buy a PS3 you should be able to do what you wish to it

should, but the end user agreement people are meant to read (but noone does) says you cant :(. thats a contract and breaking it incurrs the respective fines.

I'm sure companies like sony and Microsoft wouldn't mind that customisabilty that homebrew brings, but it just opens the flood gate to piracy too easily )=

lol so what your saying is if I record I video of me breaking into my own car & upload into youtube i'll get raided :O
That isn't exactly a crime though is it. [Facepalm]
Honestly, what GeoHot has done can be argued right or wrong, but donating money to some guy who has some legal troubles over donating money to kids in 3rd World countries who don't even have enough money for a meal or the victims of the recent earthquakes is absolutely ridiculous.
All I can say to GeoHot is: Get a real job.
