Maybe not so much the literal sense of the word, but his actions are taking profit away from game developers, through lost game sales. He is one of those metaphorical thiefs .

No, just no....and what the hell is a "metaphorical thief"? Either he stole something or he didn't. As far as I can tell, he's stolen nothing and he's not up on charges of theft. It's careless slander of that nature that gives people who don't know any better a bad impression of what he has done.
In fact GH Firmware did not enable anyone to use backups. That required the Level 2 Package. Why are you blaming GeoHot and not the author of THAT package?

And to all the rest of the people in this thread jumping on that bandwagon- wake up to yourselves. This threatens to set a precedent far greater than you seem to appreciate. If he gets screwed over in court, it will be a disgraceful injustice that may effectively outlaw a vast majority of console modifications - and all because he may be unable to afford the legal representation which Sony obviously can. Sony have had homes raided, personal equipment confiscated, computers searched, and even IPs of everyone who have accessed Geohot's site obtained (that includes a lot of us), for god only knows what reason. They're knee deep in shit and they're fighting dirty to get out of it- They deserve no respect nor support for this; Geohot needs all the help he can get.
