What PS3 console to buy ?

1092 Views 27 Posts Locked Playstation 3 Hardware
Hiya all , just decided it was time to get a Ps3 console and was wondering about the different Hard drive sizes...

does this matter and can i change the hard drives myself ?

i heard someone mention that the new 40gb ps3 was different to the old 20gb + 60gb is this a good or bad thing ?

yeah and basically anything else i need to know

cheers
The old 60GB PS3s here in Australia had 4 USB ports, memory card reader and PS2 backward compatibility.

The newer 40GB PS3s, only have 2 USB ports, no memory card reader and no PS2 backward compatibility.

Don't forget, you can upgrade your hard drive later on

you can only buy the 40GB in Australia so you have no choice
Just to add to monkeez comment, with the amount of Disk Read Error's happening, I wouldn't recommend buying anything other than an Australian retail console, otherwise you'll be SOL if it happens to you.
i guess my options are a 40gb or a 40gb one then

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated

just remember that 40 gig PS3 cant play PS2 games. So if you want to play PS2 game's then keep your PS2.
You could get a 60 gig one second hand

Off eBay or something. When I was in the market for a PS3, I was after the BNIB (Brand New In Box) 60GB PS3s on ebay.com.au

But all those auctions always ended in 4 digits. I gave up, and just bought a 40GB PS3 instead lol.
Id get a 60GB but if you cant find one then just get a 40GB one instead it should be better than nothing
Is the 80Gb being launched soon?

We don’t know. As soon as Sony Europe announces that the 80gig's will becoming to Aus you will see something up at your local JB and EB's advertising it. Plus if you keep checking MYPS3 we will let everyone know if and when it happens.

But if it dose happen it will be closer to Christmas
Import an 80gb model from Japan.

I didn't know that Japan had the 80gb SKU???

@ Batfink: also remember that the 40gb can still play PSOne games!

Also, there's rumour going round that there could be a Backwards Compatability Emulation Firmware for the 40gb in the near future?! (around Sept/Oct.)

According to the PS3 SKU Timeline (from Wikipedia), I don't think they did:

I think your best bet would be from America or Hong Kong ...
if you import a 80GB you cant play AUS ps2 games to whats the point? just get a 40GB

Well, I'd care more about being able to play Region A Blu-rays than PS2 games to be honest ...

But that's just me.
Wooo Wutang
Your a pwnage now lololol
Yea! I was finally able to join the Team of Pwnerers!

I've updated my profile's art bar ... and I'm also thinking of an avatar change

i got my 60GB PS3 imported from japan; just had to buy an extra power converter but besides that it is working fine =]

you could always upgrade the hard drive, im planning to put in 160 or 250 later in the year
