Myki (used for shopping) are you ****ing kidding me?

Ok so apparently everyone wants it???

The most broken piece of crap i have ever seen.

Ok for today for instance.

I swiped on at a train station i was on my way to glen ferrie... Anyway i got pulled over my a dickhead inspector and was told it was not swiped on and after an argument he started saying anything i say or do will be used against you. (I deserve a medal for not completely going mental). SO he gives me a ticket and walks off. I get to glen ferrie and swip my card it then swipes off. Now how the **** was i not swiped on? to my knowledge you cannot swipe of twice.

I am going to abuse the shit out of metro in the morning and demand they withdraw their ticket for their error once again. Sick of this piece of shit system that doesn't and has never worked.

I agree, metro shouldn't' have never taken out metcard... it used to be simple.
I don't mind Myki. Since I get yearly tickets, I prefer the more solid card. The only thing I don't like is touching off.
@ dusty lids
Do you go Swinburne by any chance?
I was trying to work this out while I was there in March. Once they stop metcards (November?), How will people catch public transport without a myki (ie. people not from Melbourne)?

...like ME!!!...
I thought they gave up on Myki because it never works lol
You have to buy Day passes or some crap. They have something in place for that. I have only ever used it once. I think Metcard will be gone in most places by end of July.

they have a system like this in hong kong
but its only retailers at the train stations that do it
The Myki system is pretty rubbish. Touching off should be totally eliminated, and that would solve most problems. It would also mean removing Zone 2, but who cares. At least it would work.

Takes forever to get out of the trainstation in the morning because everyone is trying to touch off, and half the readers are generally broken.

The other day, despite using Myki pass, it gave me a balance of -$1.80. probably because it didn't touch off properly, which then meant I had to put money on (that I'm not going to use) just to use the monthly pass that Ive paid $110 for and is active. Ridiculous.

It probably wouldn't be necessary to eliminate Zone 2. I mean, the Metcard system worked fairly well with transitioning between zones and such.

How would it work?

It currently assumes you go into Zone 2 if you don't touch off.
when we went to melbourne we purposely avoided having to use it.. instead we walked and went on the free tram.. i bloody hate those things and i have only used them a couple of times in the past

The same way the metcards worked. Wherever you touched on from is what you should get charged.
I always forget to touch off and get charged so much [Rage]

Also how do you put money on your myki when on the bus? Surely they need to do something about that or else people are going to be stranded.
I usually get to ride for free because there isn’t a myki machine at my stop. I tell the driver ‘I don’t have money on it, what do I do?’ and they tell me to just get on anyway.
Free ride! but i always feel like a cheat.... Myki (used for shopping) are you ****ing kidding me?
I think the buses will eventually be able to charge the Myki?

When I used to use public transport regularly we would always use Metcards, so much simpler. When holidaying in the GC we got their cards up there, same system, worked great, cheaper, etc. Except, same story, touching on or off sometimes didn't work.. you'd come back the next day and do the opposite, then when you get off you might touch on unknowingly... and you get fined twice. Too much complexity for something that gets done when you're usually in a rush.

yeah but if you don't touch off how will it know how far you have gone, with the Metcard you bought a zone 1 or 2 or zone 1-2 tickets. If you touched on in the city and went into zone 2 the Myki wouldn't know how far you have gone. Metcards work because you prepay it where as Myki charges based on touching on and off. Eliminating zone 2 would mean you only got charged for the trip. If you touch on during the same day again it would be a day charge and if not you will get charged the 2 hour fee.
If you head into a zone 1 area from zone 2, then chances are you'll have to touch on from a zone 1 area in order to make your return trip.
And if you go from zone 1 finishing in zone 2, how will it know?
Why would it need to? When you go from 1 to 2 (or vice versa) in a single trip, you never buy a 1+2 ticket unless you're definitely returning by the same route. It's the same as buying a z1 for the first trip, and a z2 for the return trip.
Yes you do. If you are doing a one way trip and going from zone 1 into zone 2 you have to buy a zone 1-2 ticket
No-one I know ever did that with metcards unless they were getting off in the city loop.
They did that because they were being dodgy. If you are going between zones, legally you need to have a ticket valid for those zones. if an inspector came up to you while in zone 2 and you bought a ticket from zone 1 you would either told to get off and go buy one or you will get fine

"Fares for travelling on Melbourne's trains, trams and buses are separated into two zones: Zone 1 for inner-city and Zone 2 for the middle and outer suburbs.

Using the network maps, check what zones you are planning to visit and make sure you have a ticket that covers your entire journey.

Please note: tickets need to be valid for each zone travelled in; however, when travelling in a zone boundary overlap, the ticket can be valid for either zone."

That is a copy from their website
