Would you help colonise another planet?

All this talk about the Mars mission has me thinking. If you had the opportunity to colonise another planet, would you take it?

Let's say the government was sending 200 people from each country to Mars. They just worked out a way to terraform the air so make it breathable (at least inside these small colony camps) and you were sent there with your travel expenses paid to setup the colony would you take it?

There would be no currency, no stores, nothing up there. Do you think you would want to be part of the first people to an uncharted planet?

OOoOOOoh good question.

Not sure how I'd feel about it. I mean sure we have had shows like "Terra nova" showing what it might be like and how you may encounter other "life forms", but to actually be the VERY first colony to arrive... not sure.

I'd be keen for the second colonisation I think. I like to think of myself as the adventurous type but alas, I'd be scared to be the very first.

I'd be tempted but I wouldn't want to be one of the first. There's way to many risks involved unless of course this was beneficial to my family.
My mate had done isolation in antarctica for a few months for work. doing bugger all except drink and apparently fool around with the other staff. Would it be much different? He certainly wouldn't do it again though.

I guess you wouldn't go crazy with that many people going there but geez, you'd need to build a huge arse ship for that - that's a lot of people to setup at first. it'd probably be done in drips.

Getting there would be the biggest pain in the arse. They would need to improve space travel.

I'd wait 10 years until anything that could go wrong does go wrong and/or is permanently prevented. And besides, if you got up there straight away it'd just be like:

Day 1: "WOOH!! I'M ON MARS!"

Day 2: "All I can see is red hills and plains! I've never seen anything like it!"

Day : "Wow, moving around in zero gravity is so much fun once you get used to it!"

Day 4: "Space looks so different from here than from Earth!"

Day 5: "This red dust is getting boring. Are there any trees here?"

Day 6: "These sandstorms are really starting to get on my nerves."

Day 7: "Ahh man, I used up my weekly water rations."

Day 8: "Great, ANOTHER power-out."

Day 9: "One-way ticket to Earth, please."

That's a flat out no for me. The work would be incredibly hard and laborious. After a long days work you'd probably just have a tiny cramped bunk bed to rest in, conditions would be crap, there'd be nothing to do for entertainment, it would just overall be a shit job to take I think.

I'd love to go but I'd wait for the "pioneers" to go there first and do all the hard work and dieing so I don't have to. Besides the trip there takes so long with out FTL drives...they need to hurry up and build that sh** Would you help colonise another planet?
