i dont think aftershave is 'neccessary' either.

Moisturiser helps if you have developed razor burn or irritation in the past. Aftershave is not really necessary.

You may want to pick up some styptic, which either comes in a stick (like in hamzie's earlier image), or in a squeeze bottle. It stops bleeding almost instantly if you do get nicked.

safety razor - about $40
blades - don't even care
shaving soap - $10-$15
2 bowls (one to lather and one for the shaving soap) (I'm assuming it doesn't matter what kind they are really)
brush $?

possibly styptic (as that sounds much more useful than moisturiser or aftershave. =P)

Yup. Syptic can be had for $4-6, the brush will cost about as much as the razor. Mine cost $35 I think. Make sure that it's badger bristle, and not synthetic bristle or hog bristle. If they say natural bristle and avoid naming the animal it came from, it's probably hog bristle. 'Pure' badger bristle is a bit stiffer than 'Best' badger bristle.

all in all, starting up will be about 100 bucks. so expensive just to shave.

but its a one time 100 with neglible blade and soap costs hey.

Correct. In the previous thread I calculated $70 for 2.5 years of double-edged blades, while cartridge blades for the same period, with the same number of blade changes, would cost $890 or so.

Holy mother of God. This thread is on 7 pages in as many hours. That is impressive.

Shaving for me is a quick thing that I do because I have to. I do appreciate that you guys turn it into an experience though.
I'm so bad, I use my cartridge razors for at least 3 weeks.

Swordsaint if you dont want to pay so much for the finest brush (badger) you can by a boar brush which is cheaper

Ebay has badger brushes for around 30.. not sure how much boar ones are.

Also instead of getting soap i think you should get a cream! I just find creams are easier to lather (also that way you only need to buy 1 bowl) :P

And ive got beginner blades (doesnt mean they arent good) which i just wont be using ever so if you want i can mail them to you or something
