The studying thread

Since heaps of people here are at school/uni and love to complain about studying, it deserves its own thread.

Homework stinks! [Rage]

Right now I'm about to start an assignment that I've since learnt was due yesterday [Facepalm] Although, this will be my first late one and is in my last semester, so it was bound to happen eventually.
In the Philippines? Oh hell yeah. In all Asian countries, because of the huge competition there.

The upside being that degrees from any western university are highly regarded in developing countries.
In Asia, it definitely is like that. In Japan, Tokyo University is basically a guaranteed job.

aaahh i see well thats quite interesting
Australia has it so easy compared to other countries. A uni degree is a uni degree no matter where you study and on top of it the government pays for your tuition so you don't have to worry about forking over the thousands of dollar a year like in the US. Its just sad to see SO many people take these benefits for granted here.
How does the Government pay for Uni tuition?

If you're talking about an exemption because you're on Centrelink benefits; the general population pays for it through taxes.

At the moment I can't afford to study at SAE but I'm looking at the FEE HELP (used to be called 'HECS'). Looks like you're still paying it back depending on your income afterwards.

My old Music teacher is still paying his HECS off and he's been teaching for YEARS!!!1!

Besides loaning you money during your studies and getting you to pay it back when you are working (it generally means you won't be getting a tax refund), the Government subsidises certain fields of study depending on how much the country needs them.

For example, the Government contributes $15,398 per year for Science students, which is the difference between coming out ~$20,000 in debt at the end of one year, or coming out ~$4,000 in debt.

The Government also limits the value of student contributions your university can ask you to make, again depending on how much the country needs them. Science counts as a national priority, for example, so my uni can only charge me $4,355 per year. If I was doing law or medicine or business, I'd be charged a maximum of $9,080.
Pretty much what Desi said, the HECS (of Fee Help) as it's called now are university places for people at a reduced, government subsidised cost. The alternative is a full fee place (a lot of international students are studying under these), which cost 3 - 5 times more per year.
Local students can not get a full-fee place for Undergraduate studies at university. They're all international full-fee paying places now.
It's cheaper to pay your uni fees up front though. You used to get 20% off, but it's now 10% if you pay at least $500 upfront per semester.

Also it's only science that's subsidised, or if there are others it's definitely not everything. You end up paying more again with HECS because of the interest.

Not only science. Everything gets subsidised, but some more than others.

Subsidy per year:
Law, accounting, administration, economics, commerce
$1,793

Humanities
$4,979

Mathematics#, statistics#, behavioural science, social studies, computing, built environment, other health
$8,808

Education*
$9,164

Clinical psychology, allied health, foreign languages, visual and performing arts
$10,832

Nursing*
$12,093

Engineering, science#, surveying
$15,398

Medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, agriculture
$19,542

That, combined with the student contribution cut-off being twice as much as a Science student is charged, is why Law and Business students have such huge HECS debt.

If it gets you a job, why even worry about your HECS?

Don't buy a house which is too expensive for your income like all those idiots who get themselves in debt. Saving money is easy for me and I'm on a casual wage, a full time job where you know your weekly wage and can plan, should be even easier. It's your spending decisions that destroy your bank, people are just super dumb with them.
@Desi I don't think so, we aren't told of being subsidised at all, whereas mates in science get told they are 50% subsidised. I think the fees are just higher for international students for various other fees (e.g. they live here but don't pay tax if they're not working but still get the services). I wouldn't really call this us being subsidised, especially when subjects are $650-1200. This is what I pay, and no mention of the government paying more not included in that. If they are, education pricing is a joke. That's already ridiculous for 12 weeks of 3-4 hours per week (which they tried to reduce to 2 before a backlash this year).
Took me 4 clicks to realise. [Shifty]

What are you studying? I am paying $550-$1120.

I don't like the idea of being in debt. I try to minimise that kind of thing; I'm sure you can understand.

Media. Nearly all are $650, but there's no reason these should be expensive. Super cheap to run IMO.

Doing an industry placement for 12 days costs us $1200. Essentially $1200 to do free work for 2 and a bit weeks and write a report on it. I know it's for the insurance, but still.

I don't know anyone outside of science/some engineering that has been informed they are being subsidised.

Oh I totally understand not wanting to be in debt. But you can plan for these things. You're doing a medical degree didn't you say? You'll have work straight out of uni and have it sorted soon enough.

Does your uni do IBL? I think the employer has to pay then.

HECS is a little bit different than the average debt though. It just gets taken out of your tax and is relative to your income so you shouldn't really notice it.

Plus it cannot be passed onto someone else, so if you die it just disappears. And apparently there's some loophole where you can live abroad for 7 years and it disappears [Shifty]

RE: IBL I don't think so. It's unpaid work that counts as a subject.
That's actually stupid, lol, most uni's have IBL. Engineering requires 12 weeks work experience to become qualified and I know 90% of that is paid (if you're desperate then you go unpaid).

This is just for this one subject. I'm sure they do it for other industries. The media industry is too competitive to do that, especially when it's so small in SA.
You should all study around the corner from me!!

Yeah but postgraduate still offers local students full fee places.

I know at my Uni you get paid to do IBL, because it's 6 or 12 months working full time, and they understand that you might have living expenses that you need to pay, and are unable to work whatever part time/casual job you did before the placement.
