Broken Promises - Would you boycott a dev?

4913 Views 53 Posts PC Gaming

It happens all the time - big developers and publishers promise gamers the world and then only deliver a fraction of what they originally promise. It's a fact of gaming life, but the latest broken promise in my book was too much.

After EA and DICE paraded the fact that we would never pay for an online service like CoD Elite and used it as a weapon in their marketing, I felt good about my purchase. Less than a year later however, they launch a premium service that is the same as Elite.

Now I know if you're an avid BF3 player and you were setting out to purchase all the DLC anyway, this latest service will save you some coin in the long run. However I am pissed off because DICE went back on everything they said, and it seems they have sold out in a sense.

As a result I'll never play Battlefield 3 again. I won't touch it, and I severely doubt I'll be checking out the inevitable Battlefield 4 when it rolls around either.

That might seem harsh, but I'm wondering if any other gamers out there have had promises broken by developers and they have decided to boycott their titles as a result?

Or make them do unimaginable things to each other and post it on youtube

It's not even DICE's decision, is it?

Seriously @Heller Seriously.... [Facepalm]

DICE really didnt go back on anything.
They released a map-pack bundle that came with afew minor features. "Not really going to a big difference other than the dog-tags and afew extra guns that are leveld with the current"

But DICE/EA have allways charged for map-packs and always had extras that came with.

Everything that was free before "Battle.Log".

If your going to have a big hissy fit and ventalot over every change developers make big or small then we might aswell make you your own channel ffs.

But hey i'll let you vent and listen even though your beating a dead cat!

You're saying this to Desi on a would you boycott a developer thread, and he answered the question. I don't understand how Desi's taking life so seriously from that. ._.

I'M so sick and tired of the "Mass Effect 3 ending sux" whine. People get so hung up on the very end that they fail to realise that the decisions you made in the first two, that you're expecting to give a unique ending, one of possibly 1000, was in fact divided up to give you unique experiences throughout the whole game. I have gotten the same ending as about 30% of the players out there, but I'd be hard pressed to find some one who got the same results at every part combined. It's the EXPERIENCE that was made unique, not the last cut scene.

On topic though, I don't trust anyone anymore. I rent my games first, and if they are worth it, then I commit my hard earned in a purchase.
Do people think that boycotting is affective? Serious question.

It's been interesting to see EA's response to the whole Mass Effect 3 ending scandal.
I don't think so, with this ME3 "boycott" anyway, if they were to release another ME game or paid DLC, I'm sure sales might not be AS good, but I'm willing to bet it would still be a success.

boycotting would only be affective if its done on mass in an organised fashion, similar to unions going on strike

@heller your reasoning confuses me, extras and dlc packs have been a way off life in the gaming world and we have had many questionable dlc additions
ie assassins creed 2 had 2 memory sequence dlc packs that were taken out of the game before release because they were not "ready" i personally thought charging gamers for content that was originally intended for the game was a dog move.
then we have bioshock 2, this time as many of you know the dlc was already on the disc the download was just and unlock code. this to me is a bit of a grey area as really its just a matter of mindset as to the delivery method.

so yeah banana [MOG]
@Froggy - You're right. I guess it's not really a boycott unless it has some clear objective and goal, which most of the criticism aimed at the ending didn't really have: people just asked for a "better ending", which is obviously subjective.
@Froggy first of all DLC hasn't ALWAYS been part of the industry, it's only come around this generation.

Secondly it wouldn't be an issue at all except for the fact that DICE said they wouldn't charge gamers for it. THEY EXPLICITLY said that.

That is going back on their word, that is what I have a problem with.
Well the reality is that sometimes publishers have to revoke what a developer has said, because it's not really the developer distributing the content. So DICE said one thing when the reality is that EA wanted to do something else. I can have sympathy for a developer in that regard, because its hard was probably forced.

dlc being a "new" thing on consoles was basically hardware limitations
pc games back in the day had expansion packs for some games, dlc as we know it was and evolution of that

as far as dice going back on there word, its not really fair to be angry at them considering the monetary climate of the industry today, we have studios closing down it kinda makes sence to do what ever you can to make money, do you have any idea as to why they went back on there word ? i would reserve my judgement till i knew

that being said i understand your point. i say go trade in you game and wash your hands of the problem :)
I dont really buy anything from capcom any more but i wouldnt call it a boycott

A devolution. Expansions packs were meaty things, entirely new games unto themselves.

People think Knights of The Nine was awesome because it added 10-20 hours to Oblivion. Bloodmoon for Morrowind was incredible because it added something like 80 or a hundred. Whole new continent, whole new story arc, Solstheim was absolutely full of amazingness and discovery.

And then consoles came along and devs decided that they should stop making epic expansions and should instead concentrate on horse armor.
I dont boycott anyone, so they made a bad game and probs the only real way to make them pay attention is to stop giving them money, but i like playing games. After ME3 EA helped release Kingdoms of Amalaur. That was good, people make mistakes and i am willing to forgive and move on.
And btw the ME3 ending stuff was blown so far out of proprtion, hmm my opinion anyway

Desi:
So yeah, it really disappointed me and I don't wanna be disappointed any more.

For someone allegedly smart, that is a very stupid thing to say :P if you spend your life avoiding potential disappointment, you're simply closing the doors of opportunity with it. I sure hope you don't have this attitude with anything more important in life...

However!

I feel you have summarised the DLC movement quite well here hahaha :D
Yeah, @Heller Seriously :P
Almost every game that comes out.

It's a STORY game. formost. If you get the same ending again and again, you might as well take the RPG elements out of it -_-

what's story got to do with it? Halo has a story, so does gears of war. Final fantasy not only has a story, it's an rpg. Yet every one of those games has the same ending over and over, with not even a choice of colour. ME 1 and 2 only had two colours each at the end, so technically, ME3 gave more than before...

That has got to be the most ludicrous attempt at justifying ME3's ending ever... and I've never played a Mass Effect game.
