Blu-ray is holding PS3 behind 360

Bluray is one of the main components of the PS3 that is differing it from the Xbox 360. However, Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft's director of product management believes that bluray is the reason PS3 sales are trailing the 360.

Greenberg says: "The fact that we're able to offer a console starting at $199 is a benefit of not being burdened with that cost," Greenberg told Edge. "Being $100 cheaper is part of the reason why we're nearly twice [Sony's] installed base."

Greenberg spoke in a recent interview to EDGE magazine supporting his argument with "Sony bet on the physical disc" for entertainment, it's facing "associated costs" that might be holding the PlayStation 3 back.

The Playstation 3's blu-ray compatibility alongside the stability was the reason behind my choice of the PS3, many casual gamers have also chosen the PS3 for this.

In my opinion, the blu-ray makes the PS3 future proof and a clear advantage for those with a HD tv. Even the best quality upscaled DVD can't even compare to a blu-ray disc, making movies much more pleasurable to watch.

I support Sony's decision on keeping the Blu-ray feature on the SLIM model of the PS3, what's your opinion?

i agree that blu-ray is not a bad decision at all. and honestly while i do see a day where the physical disc is no more, that is not today. and with the limited storage options in the 360 anyway how does he think were going to be storing all this stuff he wants downloaded?
anyway just my opinion, its marketing, not physical capability that has put the 360 over the ps3 in sales

Yes I do remember thAt and when the xbox released the add on Toshiba said stuff it no more HD DVD, Bluray has one the format war!!! Funny that!

When I got my PS3 I wasn't to bothered about blu-ray, but then I got a HD-TV and thought it was great. I rekon that more people buy 360 because its cheaper.

Yup I stopped using discs a year or two back and its only improved everything about gaming immeasurably. This will surely be the next step for console but it will certainly limit many people in Australia with our pathetic download limits.

I sell more PS3's at my work than 360's...

But we still sell more Wii's than anything. Its mostly Asian family's or mothers buying them for their kids for birthday or Christmas.

I agree that I bought the ps3 for movies but I feel as a multimedia hub it could be so much better and do sometimes wish I had something more capable.

You look at HD media hubs that do have blu-ray drives which support a wide range of codecs yet for a ps3 user you have to put up with the limitations and even go as far as loading software on a secondary computer (something i wish didnt have to) like ps3mediaserver to allow for certain features.

I do agree it held the ps3 back at the very beginning and the entry price hurt them. the price is now at acceptable area where people can now weigh up these options without breaking the bank as one still needs to factor in games and accessories.

as for trailing the xbox by almost double. surely he doesnt mean worldwide sales. maybe in fiji perhaps?

A no-brainer for me, since I wanted a BluRay player to support the other infrastructure I already had.....figured it may as well be a gaming console combo, since at that time, a stand alone BluRay player wasn't so much cheaper than the PS3.
I have no regrets at this stage and my phatty has yet to muck-up on me. I can think of no really compelling reasons to gran a 360 either instead of, or as well as my PS3 at this stage. When the Next Big Thing emerges, well, I'll save up my shekels if it has the goods and find a way of grabbing it somehow.
