Crytek's future will be free-to-play games

Crytek is set to only produce free-to-play games and will eventually no longer produce traditional boxed titles.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli stated that the studio will make the transition to F2P only development, supported by its new social gaming platform, GFACE, when its current projects are finalised, which include Crysis 3, Homefront 2 and the Xbox 360-exclusive, Ryse.

"As we were developing console games we knew, very clearly, that the future is online and free-to-play," said Yerli.

Yerli is not a fan of the current packaged games model and the prominent application of DLC and premium services by companies like EA and Activision, such as Call of Duty: Elite. In short, he believes that if "you look at what kind of games are done in the packaged goods market, with DLCs and premium services and whatnot, it's literally milking the customers to death."

Yerli asserts that the future output of the company after the transition will still reflect the quality of their current titles and the same level of standards and budget.

"As is evident in Warface, our approach is to ensure the best quality, console game quality. That implies budgets of between $10m to $30m - so no compromise there - but at the price-point of $0 entry."

"What this entails is that our future, all the new games that we’re working on, as well new projects, new platforms and technologies, are designed around free-to-play and online, with the highest quality development."

"I think this is a new breed of games that has to happen to change the landscape, and be the most user-friendly business model."

That's the most retarded argument I have seen for F2P yet. F2P is like a normal game that lives COMPLETELY OFF OF DLC! This is actually the strongest argument against F2P, in that you need to constantly pay for the company to stay afloat; the very definition of "milking" consumers. I don't see how F2P would result in "the highest quality development." No F2P games compare to paid or subscription based in terms of quality. Even then it is rare that a subscription game would meet the standards of a normal paid-for game.

Hardly "milking" consumers when they're releasing games for free.

So how are they going to make money? Either they make "premium extras", which is just DLC under a different name, or they make the game a ton slower to level up in so people want to pay for more XP/money to buy armor and weapons with. All of which results in a crappier game for consumers, no matter which side of the fence you're on. Normally paying consumers will lose the amazing games they're willing to pay for, while everyone else... still won't pay, they'll just be playing a free game instead.

It's a shitty business model, and for every "F2P success story" there's two failures to make up for it. [heartbreak]

Yes also sounding like the next box and ps will be a monthly subscription service. the game will be free to pay as long as you have paid your 49.95 per month. Then you pay for extras like guns and ammo and boots and helmets lol What a joke they are :P

i'd rather buy $80 of content on a F2P game than buy a game for 80 and then eg. Elite on top of that - at least this way you're not spending all that money on a shit game eg. mw3 cause if you don't like it, don't buy anything

I agree with abujaffer depending on the F2P but I know I've given battlefield heroes ago and that was game hidden as a way to get as much money out of someone as they can just so you can get a better (unfair) advantage. reminds me of every zynga game on fb lol.

The way activision and other companies have handled DLC isn't my cup of tea.

Also cryteks future might be in free-to-play games but licensing out their Engine might help play their bills too.
