On-Disc DLC is plain greed, says industry analyst

On-disc downloadable content, the process of releasing content already available on a game disc at an extra price, is "plain greed", according to outspoken video game analyst, Michael Pachter.

Mr Pachter said that publishers "are trying to get a jumpstart" on consumers by putting content on a disc and before unlocking it "when they feel like it".

A few years ago, we didn’t see DLC for typically six months after a game launch and I think it was Red Dead Redemption, but Take-Two kind of pioneered and launched DLC like a month after the original title and it was super successful, now you’re seeing a lot more guys do it," he said.

He did, however, acknowledge that "some guys get it right", and that "all DLC is great", as it keeps players engaged beyond the typically short experiences.

He went further to say that some gamers "feel entitled" to content already available on a disc they've purchased, and questioned whether it was technically stealing if you hack a product for content you already own.

...think of thepeople who miss out because they don't have a hone broadband line, yet still pay for the full game but don't get what they are entitled to... what happened to cheat codes and unlockables guys?!?...I miss those days...
The whole article was just screaming Gears of War 3 to me.
You know, I think it's more a question of when the content is finished. Publishers see this backlash and say, "Hey, how about we just NOT put the DLC on disk, and keep it in our computers then release a month or two after the game is actually released."

In other words, they have a choice between not releasing a game on-disc and just waiting a couple months, simply to give the impression that they were working on it after the game "went gold." Publishers have a set goal on what they want in the game, and once the game reaches that goal, everything else is DLC. A good example is those day-one DLC packs; I highly doubt those were finished from the time manufacturing began until release. Instead, the DLC was finished beforehand and the publisher simply didn't include it in the retail discs, which is somehow better than on-disc DLC. [heartbreak]
...but it kinda makes sense if the developers want to make extra things, vutut should still be free to download in the update for the certain game, its also good but annoying to have to wait for a Game Of The Year edition. to be released and have to rebuy the game...

...I've. Forgotten what else I was gonna say coz.I had to.edit.my.post...

Dear god why is someone in his position saying something like that... It's obviously illegal to hack discs for content you aren't meant to access. When you buy a hard copy game you don't 'own' everything on the disc. You own a licence to play the game that you paid for. If there's hidden DLC locked in the disc, you don't have a licence for that material.

I still can't believe people get upset about this. If a developer finishes the main game ahead of schedule, and they happen to finish the first DLC pack before release, why not put that DLC on the disc? It helps people who don't have the ability to download the DLC over the net. Or they could keep it off the disc, and release it later over the net, which would seemingly put everyone at ease. But should they really have to hide the fact that they've finished the DLC early in case the public get upset at the fact the developer didn't give it to them for free? It's their content, they put in the work creating it, they should be able to sell it separately from the main game, as long as the main game stands alone as a complete product.
