Play.com is a Online retailer in the UK, and they have just made a listing for Play TV which is an accessory for the Playstation 3 that basically turns your PS3 into upper spec TV set top box further enhancing the multimedia features of the PS3.

Play TV Listed Functions

  • Record and view your favourite programmes at the same time - Play TV enables you to record both Standard Definition as well as High Definition.
  • Personal Video Recorder functionality - watch live TV, pause, fast forward and rewind.
  • Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) to show what's on, now and next - up to 7 days in advance in certain countries.
  • Mobile TV functionality - export content easily from PS3 HDD to PSP - watch TV on the go! Thanks to live streaming, you can watch your favourite show whilst abroad.
  • Channel surf with either your BD remote or your Sixaxis.
  •

All of these features seem very useful, even more so if you don’t currently own a set top box, the down side for anyone who does not live in the Europe is that this PS3 accessory is an European exclusive with no plans for a worldwide release as of now, for those that do live in Europe the Play TV accessory will be released on March 28th this year.

It records TV shows to your hard drive and acts like tivo (to an extent) so you can go back and watch shows you have missed. An essential app for me. I just may need to upgrade my PS3s hard drive.
wooo, hd recording
i'm so utterly confused :S

i'll get it anyway!
will this let you record pay tv?
Damn i hope so mateo I might get this, once i know more about it
I want one!!

I hope to comes here but I wonder how it will work as my tv already has a HD Turner built in.
does this come out in aus ?
This will 100% NOT let you record Pay TV - it will only record the Free-to-air Digital TV channels.

how do you know ?
Because I have spent more that the 10 minutes you have, reading about this.

Because it's a Twin HD tuner, that accepts a signal via your arial socket, not from yout cable feed.

Becuase Sony say so. Watch this: www.gizmodo.com.au/

its just normal tv watch the vid that klue linked
I give up - people ARE getting dumber...
Yeh guys all this device dose is turn your ps3 into a twin tuner HD set top box with a hard drive. like this one cgi.ebay.com.au/

So basicly you can then use your PS3 to watch and record Free to Air Tv. That Means just channels ABC, SBS, 7, 9, 10 and any variants of them you may have in your local area
i wonder how much it will cost?
and again aus will be the last to get this...
can't wait for this.
found interesting link..
www.stuff.co.nz/
maybe playtv won't be so europe exclusive as this article leads us to believe.
looking forward to this!

(Hints at an 'april' release)

well America isnt geting it at all so its not all that bad.
Our tv aerial sockets are exactly the same shape as European aren't they, so surely you can just import one?

I'm confused does this mean you can watch live tv using remote play on your psp that mgiht even make me buy one!

How does data transmit from your ps3 to psp does it somehow use internet or is it soem other technology, ca I watch tv on my psp in melbourne when my ps3 is in hobart?

Yeh the ps3 can send the Video stream from the play TV device either via WiFi if your in range of your ps3 or over the internet if you are away from your ps3.

yes apparetly - with ps3 turned on in Hobart - you can set the timer on the PS3 from your PSP in melbourne at a wifi spot for example - then the ps3 will record the tv show - then you can remotely watch the show on your psp sometime later.

and yes - you can watch live tv (+ tell ps3 to record) on your psp within your secure wifi network at home. Cool huh!

What I wanna know is can you record tv (use remote functions etc) while playing a game at the same time.

I would percieve that as a pretty serious flaw if it cant - And in thinking about it, i think there might be a secondary HDD in the actual Play TV unit, that the shows record onto.

You could use the PS3 to program the PlayTV box, which connects to the PS3 via USB, so it could possibly be self-containted whil you are playing a game, or even have the PS3 turned off???

Thoughts?
yes, that does make sense, cos it is a pretty big box.. there must be something in there. heres hoping it is an HDD, otherwise gaming might be affected.. and that just not good
Looks like a pretty small box to me actually. Especially compared to other stand alone units.

The picture makes it look smaller than the width of a DVD.

I doubt that they'll build the HDD into it. That would just generate complaints on the increase in cost and size of the HDD.

good point, but there really should be a way of recording whilst playing. Maybe this is where the in game XMB comes into play ..?
lol
anyway, im sure it will be a great addition to the sony room we now have! (..just need one of them flash bravia sound systems..)
I might get this, all our TV is changing, we're looosing Terrestial Analogue TV, and we have to get Terriestial Digital, Sky, or cable. I'll need something for my TV in my rooom.

Good find!!

According to this article yes it will.

www.current.com.au/

"SCE Australia said it expected more people to buy PSP’s with the arrival of PlayTV, which allows users to record TV on their PS3 and watch it on their PSP, as well as the new Skype functionality, which turns the console effectively into a phone."

whats with the look of it? its not glossy at all.. looks like trash. i'll be getting one either way tho. I don't see how it has to be MEGA-SIZE as well.. little laptop digital tv tuners are tiny.. even the dual tuner ones!

my pet hate with my 40gb PS3 - no usb port on the back of the unit where the power and av connections are.. is this the same with all versions? usb ports only on the front? my case is getting modded so badly after the 12mths warranty is up.. there'll be no less than 2 dozen usb ports on MY PS3! haha kiddin.. but i will add more thats for sure.. maybe a built in card readers.. hell i might even put this thing inside my custom case.. im goin off topic - later

its coming out in aus
This is coming to Australia in Quarter 4 2008. As listed by mass merchant.
This is Tivo
Sony actually has licensing rights to use TiVo software in their products. This is Tivo for PS3 can not wait!!

I ordered one from UK a while back via eBay,, works perfect here in Oz. Yes its like Tivo,, alot cheaper!
Add if you think you have a insufficient HDD space,, upgrade to a bigger one.
I'm using 3.5 external 500GB HDD thats wired internally(SATA) via HDXT... not USB.
