Rumours that the 80GB PS3 will be discontinued in Japan have spread to Australia. According to Kotaku several sources have confirmed that stock levels of the 80GB PS3 are at an all time low in Australia.
Today in JB Hi-Fi (in Adelaide for those of you playing at home) I saw a notice to customers stating that - despite their advertising - the 80GB PS3 was not in stock, and customers could register to get a console (HDD size or model not mentioned) from the next shipment in September.
Essentially, it appears that Sony are clearing out stock of the 80GB console to make way for a new SKU or model of the PS3. Either that, or we go back to the price drop speculations. Sony would want to clear current stock before making any announcements for either possibility.
It's easy to upgrade your HDD so it seems unlikely that Sony would discontinue the 80GB model to bring in more storage space alone. That leaves us with the PS3 Slim finally seeing the light of day or the much needed price cut before Christmas. Either way, we'll be happy to see what happens. Then again there's also the possibility that Sony are just low on stock at this point in time, but that seems unlikely.
