Rumour: Sony in talks with Mozilla: Possible new web browser on the way?

A posting by PlaystationInsider from an unconfirmed but reliable source has hinted on an alliance between creators of the popular web based browser Firefox, Mozilla and Sony.

Given that the PS3's web browser has had limited success in providing users with the a similar Internet experience as standard browsers have could be the possible reason for this merger.

No definite details on whether this deal has been made or even if any negotiations are proceeding.

I use - try and use - the PS3 browser all the time. I find it handy to be able to surf the web on my big sreen TV late at night from my bed.
Unfortunately the browser can be and often is a total pain in the @ss when it is constantly freezing or refusing to display pages properly (some websites work poorly and others not at all).
One of the first threads I made at MyPS3 was regarding the weakness of the PS3's browser and two and a half years later there is a glimmer of hope that SONY might actually be dragging the PS3's browser's sorry @ss into the 21st century. Hellelujah!

Though it would be great to have something... anything... better than the built in browser, I would have thought a WebKit based browser would have been a better choice. For those who don't know, that's the basis of Apple's Safari and Google Chrome's browser, and is faster and more standard compliant than Firefox. Also more light weight, which is needed because the PS3 doesn't have huge amounts of memory - that is why it is also the basis of most modern phone browsers instead of Firefox.

No.1 = DivX support

No. 2 = XMB

No. 3 = Friends list from 50 to 100

Me too or at least 150 should happen eventually, I like the coloured boxes now though makes the friend list look alot better.

Isnt that what everything of the PSN Store is. You can pause, turn off your PS3 and then continue exactly like torrents. I like how you can half download something, turn off your PS3 and then later on turn your PS3 back on and continue where you left of

There was/is a site you must pay to join that does torrents through PS3 but why bother? just use public libraries or internet cafes.

The reason why so man people use firefox nowadays is because of its great use of plugins.

Would the ps3 take advantage of these plugins if they were use some kind of hybrid browser on the ps3? would it be beneficial

I believe the reason the ps3 browser seems to freeze or lock up is because of the amount of ram usage or lack there of available. Im sure some of you have noticed that you've had to close the browser or tabs to continue browsing?

The firefox browser up until lately is still a resource hog and though its improving it still has a long way to go.

Chrome is a very simple browser but could work well but are much more proven browser I'd like is the opera platform. You can see that on mobiles and on the wii. I would love to see the opera browser on there.

either way, the current browser on the ps3 needs to render pages better and smoothly. the gui and menus need an update thats for sure.

I'm all for seeing a new browser even if its alongside the ps3 main one but if anything, id love to see more codecs compatiblity on the machine and being able to use custom subtitles - i can dream

I'm not sure if any browser replacement will be mandatory with a firmware update or be made available as an option through the PSN Store? I have a sneaking suspicion it will be the latter. Regardless, the current browser is woefully inadequate - my Nintendo DSi's browser actually performs better in many regards?! Let's hope this is more than just rumour but with the PS3's lack of RAM, I fear any browser will always struggle on a system that (as far as RAM is concerned) was poorly conceived.
