Sony is believed to be close to buying a well known cloud gaming service -- believed to be OnLive or Gaikai -- that could change PlayStation gaming as we know it.
Edge, MCV and VG247 have all followed the story, via Kotaku, and a big announcement is expected from Gaikai at E3 next week.
Likewise, OnLive is looking to increase its market penetration after finding some success in hardware.
Sony and Microsoft have both dabbled in digital downloads, with Nintendo soon to follow, but non of the three console manufacturers have committed to cloud gaming in a big way.
If Sony does move forward and promote cloud gaming on the PS3 or its next console, it won't be at the expense of physical based media. We heard this morning that Sony is retaining the disc drive in the next generation.
