Sony on next-gen: 'It's about being the best'

Sony isn't concerned with being first ahead of Microsoft in the next-gen console race, instead focusing on the quality of the product, says SCEA boss, Jack Tretton.

Sony has "never been cheapest", explained Mr Tretton, and that it's simply about "being the best".

“We’ve never been first," he said.

“If you can build a better machine and it’s going to come out a little bit later, that’s better than rushing something to market that’s going to run out of gas for the long term."

While he acknowledged that it would be good to ship first and be the cheapest, "the number one goal is to be the best machine and that’s what we’re always focused on,” he explained.

im the best!

but regarding the article, I'm cool for them to release something when they're ready. They've always had good developers on board and some cracker games and the ps3 is still a pretty good machine. It still has some good games coming out even with all the hype about upcoming consoles.

I look forward to what sony brings out next because it'll be a killer machine and if they balance it out between the bleeding edge of technology and whats available now and allow for growth it'll probably be a far more popular machine than the ps3 especially if they've learnt anything from the ps3 launch.

Im sure they understand that they'll need the ps3 to overlap the ps4 as sales are probably going to be slow at first due to a higher price - there's no way they'll be priced the cheapest but if they get the pricing and the features right people will eventually jump on. Just like they did with the blu-ray feature on the ps3...

Well said. But then I guess so is hardware, but perhaps to developers?

Actually, no. I guess hardware accessibility for a developer is dependant on their resources?

Anyway, I think this is a pretty obvious swipe at Wii U.
