The ACT has become the first of the states and territories to pass the R18+ video game classification legislation.
Adults in Canberra will be able to purchase R18+ rated video games when the new classification system is introduced in January, 2013.
"The bill passed with tri-partisan support, though the Canberra Liberals failed in a bid to boost the penalty for inappropriate display or distribution of material rated R18+," reports the ABC.
While all of the states and territories have agreed to the new adults only rating -- after years of negotiation -- all still need to pass the individual state laws for it to become reality at the start of next year.
It's believed that a timetable has been implemented for each state to ensure the laws are passed before the January deadline.
