The leap in graphics from current to next-gen visuals will be like going from "Batman shows of the 60s to...[the] Dark Knight", according to Epic Games VP, Mark Rein.
Mr Rein believes audience tastes evolve quickly as technology improves, demanding constantly-improving graphical prowess.
"Humans evolve very slowly," began Mr Rein, "but their tastes evolve at exponentially faster rates. This is true for pretty much all forms of entertainment and media."
He drew on the evolution of the Batman character to paint a familiar picture of graphical leaps, saying it's just as hard to look back on the Batman series of the 60s as it is to look back on old video games.
"During my own brief lifetime thus far I've gone from watching the Adam West Batman shows of the 60s to watching Christian Bale's Dark Knight today.
"It's hard to go back to watch the older series, and people generally don't."
As new technologies become commodities in society, Mr Rein explained, "expectations evolve".
"Think of what mobile games looked like before the iPhone came out, and that was only five years ago."
What do you think of his remarks? Would you like to see a big leap in graphical capabilities with the next-generation of consoles?
