It looks like the PS4 is launching in Australia in 2014, in the US and Japan later this year

While nothing has been confirmed, it looks like the next PlayStation will launch in Australia in 2014, following a launch in Japan and the US later this year.

After Sony's teasing trailer last week, pointing to a big reveal on February 20, Edge is confident in claiming the "PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014."

With Australian and European hardware launches normally tied, that suggests an extended wait for Aussies.

Edge attributes the delay to "the complexities involved in European distribution."

We reiterate that as with all PS4 rumours, everything is speculation.

If it's any more than 3 months, I'm importing.

I assume it'll be a November launch.

If we have to wait until March, I will import the hell out of that shit. Sorry, but it's not 2004 anymore. Shouldn't have to wait for something like this.

If Nintendo can pull off an international launch in the same calendar month, there's no reason Sony can't do the same.

As long as GTAV gets released in September, I don't care about PS4 yet.

Also, since the PS3 is near being phased out, I'm really disappointed in the lack of great games over its lifespan.
Sure there are a few really great ones, but I feel the PS2 had a far, far superior range of games. I have bought probably a third of the games for PS3 than I did for PS2.

Early 2014 sounds about right to me. New consoles need some hype time, and they're often officially announced a year or more before release.
I was half-expecting the PS4/Xbox720 to be announced at E3 2012, with a release date of November/December 2013.
Unless the rumours and leaks we've had so far are part of official hype-building, I'd say sometime next year is more likely, for all regions.
But hey, I'm not Edge, and it does make sense to release for the holiday period.
I guess we wait until Feb 20 to find out.

PS3 is a fair way from being phased out, no one even knows when it's being launched at all and they already saying we won't get it later. Might want to wait tan see if it's launching this year at all

Lack of great games? Were have you been for that past 6 years? Gaming has never been better than right now and it's gonna get better

Pretty likely this will happen, but I wish that it doesn't. We'll be effected by European distrubtuion problems and will be given a date close to theirs which is a real shame.

If it does happen though I'll be importing. I am not paying for a more jacked up price at a later release date (unless it's reasonable compared to the US launch) when I can import with no issues at a nice price.

It wont be phased out for awhile. Sony have a 10 year lifecycle they aim to keep with all of their consoles and the PS2 only stopped being manufactured last year, they'll keep the PS3 around for longer (especially without backwards compatiblity and the opprutuinity for a pricedrop after the PS4 hits)

Also that's a matter of preference, I've bought far more games and enjoyed them more than I have on any console up until now on my PS3.

It's really not, many launches for consoles/handhelds have not been simultanious worldwide.

We're not, we're limited by Australian distribution problems. We just share the PAL region. Big difference. Shit costs more here.

Pure speculation; the PS2 may have only been stopped being manufactured last year, but when did anything noteworthy come out in the last 5? Same deal with the Wii. If the PS4 releases in the world this year, by 2016 no-one will touch the PS3. Also you're assuming no backwards compatibility (there probably will be, if it uses Blu-Ray).

Actually, I agree with gammaray13; It IS pathetic if, by 2013, a company cannot release world-wide. Or at least near enough to count. Granted, I understand supply demands (*coughNexus4cough*), but if the PS4 is released, say, October this year in Japan, and March next year for Australia, that is absolutely pathetic. Just because "many launches for consoles/handhelds have not been simultanious worldwide", does not make the future staying the same any less pathetic.

The PS3 is still a great machine. Bring the price down to $150, bundle it with first-party games, and you have a HD Blu-Ray player that also has a pretty large online movie store, as well as high-quality games.

IMO, the PS3 offers more beyond its predecessor's launch, than the PS2 did beyond the PS3's launch.

Nah. Is the next PS in trouble because Wii U launched first?

PS4 = Super powerful console, pricey
Xbox = Home entertainment system, slightly more powerful than 360, more affordable
