PlayStation 4 to support 4K resolution - report

A source claims that Sony's next generation PlayStation will support a super HD '4K' resolution.

A 4K resolution is a horizontal display of around 4,000 pixels. It's similar to QFHD, which at 3840x2160, is four times the standard resolution of full HD.

The anonymous source told Yahoo that the PlayStation 4 will support the rumoured 80" 4K resolution LED televisions Sony is expected to announce.

Just as the PS3 pushed the uptake of Blu-Ray and more recently 3D, Sony is said to be using the PS4 to convince consumers to upgrade to the new generation of television sets.

While it sounds impressive, only a handful of games utilised the PS3's highest capable resolution of 1920x1080.

Theres already ready a 4k tv in japan, plus you can purchase a 4k movie also which also comes on a hard drive at 160gb :P

Also in development is the Ultra HD which is double (8K) its going to be confusing because they are named the same Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) 4320p

Its defiantly happening We have to move forward. With the extra resolution you will have the ability to have multiple screens like the WiiU. There has been talk about this through the NBN for television to do the same

Didn't they also say the PS3 was going to support 1080P? lol I think we can count the legit 1080P games on one hand and most of them are crap.

I'll be happy with 1080P (legit, not up-scaled). 8x AA 60FPS, I really don't think that's too much to ask of the new gen of consoles. That should really be a minimum for all the games coming to the 'next gen'.

can anyone enlighten me as to which ps3 titles utilise most of its resolution capacity? ive never thought to suss it out, although most to my knowledge only run at 720p

I can't see this happening. Sony lost far too much money with the PS3 initially to put their eggs in this basket. Besides, the human eye can't distinguish the difference between 1080p and 720p at most viewing distances seen in houses across the world. So what's the point of upping the res by a crap load more? Seems silly to me..

Sony would be better served utilizing the money on something that would appeal to the mass market.

I can understand where you're coming from barters81 as it seems unnecessary especially when you look at smartphones and their ridiculous resolutions on such a small screen but there are benefits that will come when we head into the larger cinema type screens for home and commercial usage.

Would you want Sony to stop supporting new standards especially now that LG have a 84 inch screen coming soon with 4k resolution.

Whether games coming out for the 'PS4' could handle that resolution is another topic altogether.
