Is this the new PlayStation 4 controller?

by punk Featured 26 Comments 34 Votes 2398 Views 15/02/2013 Back to News

Sony is expected to reveal the PlayStation 4 at the "See the future" event on February 20.

In anticipation, an image has leaked showcasing what may be our first look at a prototype controller for the new console.

The image shows a controller similar to the Dualshock with what appears to be a touch-pad on the front side (ala the back of PlayStation Vita) and a blue light around back.

The blue light is reminiscent of the light found on the Move controller. The analogue sticks appear to be further apart and the tips themselves concave, like the Xbox 360 controller.
Below the controller looks like a port of some sort, perhaps a audio input (headset) as well as what looks like small speakers.

Since this is a prototype, the final design may change. It'll be interesting to see what Sony unveils next week.

What do you think of the prototype?

Touch-pads are useless. I hate the Vita one.
Well, at least the sticks don't look so loose.
Looks like the DS3 gain a few pounds.
I'm happy they keep the dual sticks the same position.
Well it's in Japanese design so that's gotta be a gud thing…right?
Sony always into innovations.
That looks 3rd party lol, so cheap and nasty looking. Why do we need that screen on there? someone please tell me?
Something different would had been nice. Oh well.

I suppose, if true, we'll need to make do with a hybrid dual shock/move/vita/gamepad... thing.

it's not a screen it's like the vita touch pad on the back.

you know how everything is touch now...

Touch pad is a lot smaller than the one found on the vita so, how useful it will be remains to be seen at least in that formfactor. It does look like its 16:9 as long as it doesn't work like a traditional trackpad (laptop).

It does look a little fat so hopefully if they do go down this route that they'll improve the looks.

I don't own an xbox 360 but I do prefer the placement of their analogue sticks but having said that, I appreciate that they've widened the position of the sticks. I found it to cramp for my liking.

Is it the best way to cram all this technology into one controller that has only really one way to hold it.

Can't wait to see how they address the whole kinect/move/wii motion controls, touch controls with traditional gaming at the upcoming event. (I hope they address it)
I just wanna know what the R2 and L2 looks like and are they improved from DS3 R2/L2 buttons.
I think it should have been put on the back of the controller like the vitas it would allow for more comfortable use and better cross game button layouts
Not gonna lie, I was expecting something totally different. Wow....

perhaps you're right and that glassy track pad is an actual screen and the touch pad is at the back giving the speaker like feature more substance.
Would also make more sense if they do plan on integrating the vita with the ps4, though for more practical uses like using the internet I think it would benefit the user more with touch at the front.
Thank goodness it doesn't look like the early PS3 boomerang controller.

No thanks.

I like this touch pad. Swipes and taps could lead to some neat new gameplay.
So does someone want to do an article on this?

I wonder how many Ps3 fans will jump ship to another console if the Ps4 doesn't have analog sticks. It would make sense the devkit version would have analog sticks so they can make sure the touchpad is 100% accurate in comparison to an analog stick.
I don't mind the design. It's only a prototype so the final product will of course be on par quality wise with Sony's previous controllers. As long as Devs dont force touchpad controls in to games and only use it where it suits there's really no problems to having one, is there?
I think it looks ok. Long as it sits good in your hands and has a good feel with the buttons and triggers im all for it.

Yeah looks 3rd party to me, I dont believe this rumour.
This looks like shit :L
I hope I can still use my PS3 controller with the PS4.

It's not a rumor anymore, Kotaku confirmed with developers that this is real (heck it's shown with a devkit) and more details have been leaking from other sites. It obviously wont be the final controller, but it's at least a real prototype (although it could be one of many)

I'm prettysure that's the clickable touchpad.
Hell of a lot better than some of the stupid looking renders we have been seeing lately. This one actually looks like something Sony would do... basically stick with the only controller design they know and stitch on the latest thing Nintendo has come up with. Well at least the one pictured looks like it has a better D-Pad design I have never been a fan of the separate directional buttons for the D-pad.
