UPDATE: Sony has announced that both the Charcoal Black and Classic White variants of the even smaller PlayStation 3 will be available in Australia from September 27. The 500GB model will retail for $399.95, while the 12GB flash memory model will cost $299.95.

Sony is also releasing a dedicated 250GB HDD that can be used with the 12GB model to expand the storage.

The 500GB model will also be available in New Zealand on September 27 for NZD $519.95, but the 12GB model is slightly delayed across the Tasman and will be released on October 18 for NZD $399.95.

Original Story: Sony has announced that a new, smaller model of the PlayStation 3 will be released later this year.

The new console was announced at the Tokyo Game Show today. The second revision of the PlayStation 3 will be 25 percent smaller and 20 percent lighter than the PS3 "Slim" and 50 percent smaller than the original PlayStation 3.

However, it looks like each region will receive different versions. Europe and presumably Australia will get a 12GB model -- yes twelve -- on October 12, and a 500GB model on September 28. Those will be available in black.

Meanwhile, Sony has confirmed that Japan will get a Charcoal Black version in 500GB and 250GB options next month, while a 250GB Classic White model will follow in November.

The 250GB model will go on-sale in North America on September 25 for USD $269.99 bundled with the "Game of the Year" edition of Uncharted 3, and the 500GB model will follow on October 30 for USD $299.99.

I'm pretty sure there are storage solutions below 500GB that'll properly justify the $100 difference. Even if it's fast flash memory, 12GB is pathetic.

It looks even worse when you compare that to the price defferences in the US models.

yeah i thought they would be cheaper than this. I paid $299 for my 160gb slim when it came out, yet they are charging the same amount for this 12gb system @_@

I like that it's small, which I felt the slim version could have knocked a few more off it. It is top loading right? If it is, I'm not too keen on that.

I can understand the complaints of the smaller drive considering big certain installations can be but at least Sony will allow expansion..

compare this with the wii u pricing and it's not all that bad.

250 GB PS3 with Uncharted 3 for $269
500 GB PS3 with Assassin's Creed III for $299*

8 GB Wii U with no game for $299
32 GB Wii U with NintendoLand for $349

It's a shame with these newer models don't include the new wireless standard. Love to stream higher def stuff over to my ps3 without the need to downsample or connect it via cable.

But those new PS3 are ugly plus why the hell have they gone for a top loader? The best model was the original, the last slim was awful and this well what is wrong with Sony? I hope the PS4 announcement is soon and that they get the design right so we can put this behind us lolz. Nice to see some extra colours for the Vita, my mate is gonna love the red one but for me it makes them look silly and cheap much prefer the black.

Now that we are being honest.. Don't you think they just did this cause the wii u is coming out.. Make it look smaller so people will be enticed to buy one.. Far enough if you have a ps3 phat but if you all ready have a slim. It's like buying a new iPhone 5 cause it's bigger then the last one :P

Oh most definitely, but imo it is unnecessary but even more so is the 12GB flash model, i mean why? most games require installs on PS3.
Sony have really lost the plot this gen, closing down Studio Liverpool was stupid should of kept them open rather than invest in this
