thatgamecompany is going 100% independent after fulfilling a three-game contract with Sony Computer Entertainment America.
The studio behind Flow, Flower and Journey received a $5.5 million boost from Benchmark Capital's Mitch Lasky, meaning they can develop, release and distribute their next tile themselves.
Today I am pleased to announce thatgamecompany has raised funding to develop and release our games independently. This enables us to bring our games to more platforms and provide our players the highest quality experience at every point of contact," - Jenova Chen, thatgamecompany
Don't expect their first three games to appear on any other platform however, Sony still owns the rights to those. However Chen has told Joystiq that while they haven't announced if their next adventure will be multiplatform, they are trying to reach an audience larger than that of the PS3.
Considering Journey is one of my favourite games this generation, I'm interested to see how thatgamecompany copes with full control.
