Ubisoft: The industry is "penalised" by overdue consoles

While we're already seeing the 8th year of the current console generation there's no argument people are starting to look at what's next. Sure, there might still be enough power left to exploit the systems' components, but people are ready for something new. For Ubisoft it is essential to see new hardware coming.

According to CEO and co-founder Yves Guillemot at Ubisoft in an interview with Gamasutra, the current consoles are holding back progress and innovation within the industry.

"What we missed was a new console every five years," he says. "We have been penalized by the lack of new consoles on the market. I understand the manufacturers don't want them too often because it's expensive, but it's important for the entire industry to have new consoles because it helps creativity."

Guillemot also stresses that it is difficult to introduce new IP's on older consoles. He supposes this is also the reason why there are currently many sequels being produced.

"It's a lot less risky for us to create new IPs and new products when we're in the beginning of a new generation," he says. "Our customers are very open to new things. Our customers are reopening their minds -- and they are really going after what's best. ... At the end of a console generation, they want new stuff, but they don't buy new stuff as much. They know their friends will play Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed so they go for that. So the end of a cycle is very difficult."

What do you think of Guillemot's statement? Can we say the consoles have weighed down the industry?

His arguments are all correct. There's a reason games like Minecraft and DayZ are catching on so quickly on the PC, and that's because console gamers are looking at the PC as that "next-generation"; only now are the GameCube/PS2/Xbox generation of gamers old enough to realize that PC is a constantly evolving platform, and that wave of gamers is migrating to PC. Normally, they'd be migrating to the next generation of consoles, along with the millions of newcomers (N64/PS1 generation to the one after it, or 8-bit generation to 16-bit); now, however, you have the current gamers moving to PC or the "other side" (PS3 to 360 and vice versa), while everyone else is going to mobile gaming.

It's very detrimental to the industry as a whole, and while people attribute mobile gaming as the reason the industry's down, I believe it's the quick cash grabs like Kinect and Ubisoft's own uDraw tablet have caused the industry's decline. These gamers look at this stuff and say, "This is next-gen? I can buy that on my iPhone." when they should doing be the entire opposite. [heartbreak]
I'm cautious about Ubisoft's comments regarding next-gen because I'm not sure if there is vested interest or not (which I think there is).

This is a company that talks about every new piece of Nintendo hardware like as if it's the second company of Christ, and simply because they pack every hardware launch with games people quickly forget about.

So yeah, of course he is going to talk up next-gen and say it's about time we get new hardware, because the publisher has invested crap loads in Wii U, which is not unlike how it treats most Nintendo hardware launches: it takes advantage of a lack other third party support to essentially monopolise the launch.
