Ashes Cricket 2009 - 8 / 10

Don the Baggy Green and continue the Cricketing Rivalry, in the comfort of your own home.
Ashes Cricket 2009

With the taste of defeat still fresh in many Australian’s minds, Codemasters now offers us “Ashes Cricket ‘09”, and the opportunity to change the outcome of the series, albeit in a video game. Ashes Cricket ’09 (AC09), the sequel to Codemasters popular game “Ricky Ponting International Cricket 2007”, makes its debut on the PS3 this year. With new gameplay dynamics, more impressive graphics and commentary from Cricketing greats Jonathan Agnew, Tony Greig, Ian Bishop, Shane Warne and Sir Ian Botham, Ashes Cricket ’09 looks like a welcomed addition to the Codemasters Cricket Franchise, and to any Cricket fans game collection.

Graphics

Being a Cricket game, I had my suspicions that AC09 would be a “Gameplay over graphics” compromise. But that simply isn’t the case. Whilst there are better looking sports games out there, I was surprised to see that a game with a relatively low budget, could look as good as it does. Player likenesses are also something to be admired, particularly that of the Australian and English players (The only 2 officially licensed teams in the game). Another thing you will quickly notice is that Codemasters have cut a few corners, particularly in the presentation of the crowd. To put it bluntly, the spectator’s character models would look bad in a PS1 game. Although I’m guessing crowd realism isn’t the reason anyone would be interested in buying the game, it’s definitely an area in need of some major improvement. The Stadiums Grounds, Pitch and the Stadium itself have all been modeled off their real life counterparts, with some visible similarities. Matches can be played at various times in the day, with various weather conditions, producing visible lighting changes, but there’s nothing here that will blow you away.

Gameplay

Gameplay is easily AC09’s strongest point. Codemasters have delivered a game that will not only please Cricketing fans, but also those not too keen on the sport. One area in need of improvement is the games difficulty, it’s simply too easy. Whilst there are 3 difficulty settings, I never had any trouble picking up wickets or scoring runs, even whilst playing on the hardest difficulty. The game is also quite forgiving, and will often hand you a wicket or two, or some easy runs depending on how you are progressing. Batting is the easiest, and most enjoyable part of the game. The player can select a front foot shot with L1, a back foot shot with L2 and can hold L1 and L2 to charge down the pitch. Shot direction is chosen with the left analogue stick, and shot type (Defensive, Attacking or Lofted) is chosen with Square, X and Circle. The only real challenge here is the shot timing, but you’ll pick up on it pretty quickly. Bowling goes by a similar method. Ball length and width is applied with the left analogue stick and ball type is selected with the face buttons. The player can also bowl an additional selection of deliveries (Cutters, balls with reverse swing) by tapping L1 or R1. AC09 also offers an extensive range of player customization, changeable match setting and Cricketing venues (Strangely, the WACA doesn’t make an appearance). Alongside the Ashes, AC09 offers ODI’s, 20 / 20 games and Test matches. Although I was slightly disappointed to see there were no changes to the gameplay in the other modes (More aggressive fielding in 20 / 20 games etc). Extensive Batting, Bowling and Fielding tutorials & challenges are also on offer, alongside the games support for up to 4 players locally, and 2 players online, Codemasters have included enough to keep any Cricket fan happy.

Oh, and yes, it has trophies.

Sound

AC09 is presented a lot like a real televised game of Cricket. Thus commentary is provided from Cricketing greats Shane Warne, Sir Ian Botham, Jonathan Agnew, Tony Greig and Ian Bishop. The commentary is unfortunately far too limited, and you will be hearing the same phrases and comments far too often. Although I found the repetitions to be more amusing than annoying. A quick rundown of the weather and pitch conditions is given at the start of the match, to help you in your decision at the coin toss (If you win!). Annoyingly, the commentators will often contradict themselves. For instance, stating that the pitch is a Batsman’s paradise before the coin toss, then afterwards, saying it’s a bowler’s delight. Again, I didn’t find this to be much of an annoyance. AC09 offers no real in game music, so the sound of a well timed shot will have to keep your ears satisfied!

Final Verdict

Not a lot more can be said about the game, it is quite a basic game at heart. The fun factor is definitely there, especially if you’re a Cricket fan (Eager for some revenge against the Brits!). The game certainly offers enough to satisfy most, with the Ashes Series itself, ODI’s, 20 / 20’s and Test matches, on top of online and local multiplayer you won’t be left disappointed. So what are you waiting for? Go don the Baggy Green and experience the closest thing to a real game of Cricket, without leaving your living room.

Ashes Cricket '09 Review Comments

Thought I'd type this up as I've been playing the game lately You guys don't know how hard it was not to make any Cricket puns! xD
i want this game
I've been playing this since release date and I've got to say I'm a quite disappointed in the over all package Codemasters has given us.
They named it Ashes Cricket 2009, and for a reason, because the ashes test series is really all you can play.
I enjoy playing full test series against different countries, playing the World Cup and full one day series, none of these can we do, the only test series you can play is the ashes.
For one day and T20 all you can play is 3 games, quarters, semis and final, no full series.

I personally thought the EA brand cricket on the PS2 was a better product than the previous Codemasters Ponting Cricket 2007.
I can only hope EA produce a new cricket for the next gen consoles, because I'll tell you now it will be a far better product.

In EAs cricket, World Cups and full around the world Test series will be there to be played, more grounds to play on, in short a completed game, not what has been handed to us by codmasters.

Nice review mate, I hope to finally have a chance to play it this week.

Thanks man

@Emjay57:

I've played that EA Cricket game on PS2 (I forget its name ) I enjoyed it quite a lot too Although i found AC09 to be a more even experience, i found bowling in the EA game to be quite boring

But i think you have some good points, they could have put more modes in AC09

Don't get me wrong, the game is good just lacking variety in what you can do.
From the "have a bash with ya mates" point of view the arcade look and feel make for an entertaining time.

With bowling I thought EAs version was neater, which I think Codemasters noted and used a similar system here, I prefer to bowl than batting and judge the games from that point of view.
But Codemasters still carries the same flaws from previous versions to here, which can be expoilted to your advantage.

It was a good review GTADude, I nodded to most of what you said.
But now the gloss of finally getting a cricket game on PS3, all the niggles are starting to bother me.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with you, in fact if anything i think you're right I thought half the fun came from earning the trophies, after I'd got them id did feel a little more lackluster-ish

Batting was a little to easy for my liking, and i think bowling need a bit of work The ball simply doesn't do enough, it hardly swings, and a lot of them time no matter where you bowl it the opposition will hit you for 6
I agree with the batting, the other day I put down 6/498 in a T20???? How's that possible and on normal too, you can hit lofted shots all day and take the max 36 per over.

The swing is reduced from the previous 2007 version, but though I'd like more it's not a big worry to me, mainly because it's consistant, not like 2007 where you could manipulate the swing after release).
No the cutting of a ball is the problem, to me, it seems almost an after thought and really it's just as effective, not

I like to stack my side with spinners because I think this is the only bit they got right and their the most fun to toil away.

To stop sixes, just bowl out-swingers, yorker length on their leg stump. All out for 20.
Great review mate, I'm a big fan of this game and its a great game for the PS3 just for a little change of pace.

Thanks man, i appreciate it

Has anyone else experienced problems with the bowling challenges and lessons? In the Bowling lesson, i have to bowl an in swinger and hit the stumps, which i do, but it says it was the wrong delivery And in the challenges, i have emulate Shane Warne's dismissal of Mike Gatting, but again, it keeps saying I'm bowling the wrong delivery
Ya I've had similar problems too, seems to be glitches to me.

I started to find an increasing amount of glitches in the game and all of them seem to be in bowling.
Great review i have only played this on my laptop from a source of ill repute and it was glitchy but okay,i may get this for PS3 one day

I just played a match where my bowler kept running THROUGH the stumps, knocking off the bails Although, the angle did work in my favor

Yeah I had 3 wickets in 3 balls with B Lee before one ball was bowled once, like you he just kept running and before I knew it the Poms were 3/0.

The one that real bugs me and not a glitch, just bad programing is when your opponent swing the bats before the ball is even out of the bowlers hand and their bowled or LBW, looks so bad and by no means satisfying to get the wicket.

I use C White alot because he can bowl spin from out of the foot marks but when you bowl a batsman around the legs while the play a late cut. Bah crap to watch, who plays a late cut for a wide offside ball when the ball is wide down the leg side.

This is a carry over from 2007, same happened there.

Playing on hard more and finding it more fun. Won my first Ashes match with neither team scoring more than 139 (by me).

Next test Ponting put it together scoring 250 before declaring at 9/452.
Nice work GTAdude. You always do a great and entertaining review.
