Ingredients for a great game go sour.

What Lollipop Chainsaw Got Right

+ Arcade beat 'em up action + Great upgrade system
+ Fitting soundtrack + Fun factor is through the roof

What Lollipop Chainsaw Got Wrong

- Too short - Gameplay becomes repetitive
- Borderline inappropriate - Combo system is under-utilised

Suda 51 has a cult following these days. His unconventional titles such as Killer 7, No More Heroes and most recently Shadows of the Damned are often talked about in gaming circles, yet fail to reach blockbuster status. His latest effort, Lollipop Chainsaw, is oozing with Suda 51 charm, but relies on offensive humour and tedious gameplay to pull it through.

Get the Adobe Flash Player to see this video.

Check out the official trailer!

Players fill the shoes of a Juliet Starling, a young cheerleader who happens to be a zombie hunter in her spare time. On her 18th birthday, zombies take over her school and her boyfriend Nick is bitten and starts to turn. So Juliet does what every zombie-hunting girlfriend would do... chops his head off and wears it as a belt.

That's the kind of bat shit crazy story we're dealing with here, but it wouldn't be a Suda 51 game if the narrative was "normal". Along the way you'll uncover more about Juliet's family history, learn how the zombie rock and roll lords are controlling the outbreak, and eventually how we live alongside two other dimensions who are trying to break into our world.

Sounds cool, right?

That's exactly what Lollipop Chainsaw is, cool. It reeks of pop culture references, and the fantastic punk rock soundtrack really makes it feel like a living, breathing comic from the 80's unfolding on your screen. This kind of ludicrous action could only exist in video games, and in that respect Lollipop Chainsaw, at times, is the most exciting game I've played in years. However at other moments, it becomes nothing more than an embarrassment for gamers.

Abhorrent dialogue such as "Time to get hardcore you zombie huntin' slut" and gratitude from rescued teens claiming "I'm totally going to masterbate over you tonight" are unnecessary and beyond inappropriate.

Before we get into the negatives however, let's talk about the gameplay. Juliet is capable of pulling off a number of sweet combos using her pom poms and her chainsaw to obliterate zombies. As you progress you will collect coins which can then be spent at the Chop Shop to unlock more combos and upgrades. While there are plenty of items and combos to unlock, most of them are fairly useless as the entire game can be completed with just a handful of moves.

After the first few levels it becomes apparent that the main task at hand is getting from point A to point B. The same type of zombies fill the screens as you slice and dice your way from one attack to the next, making Lollipop Chainsaw a repetitive affair. The inclusion of online leaderboards for scores and combos will keep things interesting, if you have friends who are also playing the game.

He talks to her arse for a good 5 minutes, no joke!

The big drawcard are the boss fights, which are certainly unique in every definition of the word. Each of the bosses are memorable and challenging, and it really makes you wish that as much time and effort had been put into the main level designs. As a result however, you are compelled to keep on going just so you can see how Suda 51 is going to top his last boss effort.

While Lollipop Chainsaw has unique and interesting characters throughout the entire game, they are never explored or given a chance to grow. Along with a cast of interesting yet shallow characters are some rather questionable dialogue exchanges that really bring the game down.

Abhorrent dialogue such as "Time to get hardcore you zombie huntin' slut" and gratitude from rescued teens claiming "I'm totally going to masterbate over you tonight" are unnecessary and beyond inappropriate. Not only does it bring down the entire gameplay experience, but it adds more fuel to the fire that gaming is not a serious entertainment medium. While I understand that this is all supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, it's not even remotely funny and quite frankly, offensive.

The Final Verdict

Lollipop Chainsaw has all the right ingredients to make another cult hit for Suda 51, yet it falls flat thanks to repetitive level design. shallow characters and borderline offensive dialogue. While the online mode should offer some legs if you have friends playing the game, chances are this will only appeal to existing fans of Suda 51's unique style.

I found Shadows of the Damned pushed a lot of boundaries as well but this just sounds stupid as far as dialogue

Game play looks good though and killing zombies is always fun but I agree with it making the industry look somewhat less serious... bummer.
It might be because I'm no way mature about jokes but I found the jokes in this game and the dialogue superb and exquisite.
Thanks @Leasha glad you enjoyed the review.

@q-Firzenion-p I'm sure some people will enjoy the humour, but personally I thought it really brought the tone of the game down.

Also what did you guys think of the new review layout? Better or worse than the Good and Bad point system we usually use?
the review layout is awesome, however the game is fantastic i love how cheesey it is its nice to see a game that is all about fun and as im over 18 i find it very funny, but @Heller if you give a game a bad score cos u find it offensive maybe you should not review the game
I have been waiting for reviews on this game and everyone has held back.

Really like the new lay out very easy to follow. total thumbs up.

Abhorrent dialogue such as "Time to get hardcore you zombie huntin' slut" and gratitude from rescued teens claiming "I'm totally going to masterbate over you tonight" are unnecessary and beyond inappropriate.

Isn't this a family friendly website? [Shifty] :P

But its not a family friendly game.
I fail to see your point
This sounds like my type of game! [MOG]

Oh look! I just picked it up! Oh yeaaah! [MOG] *_*
@gammaray13 - I don't find it offensive, but I can see that a majority of people would. Instead I found it to be unnecessary, off putting, that it tried too hard and ultimately it made itself look stupid.

I understand it's meant to be over the top, cheesy and crazy, and certain elements of that work rather well. I also gave it a bad review because it was far too repetitive.

Also 6/10 isn't a bad review, 4/10 is a bad review. It's still 60% meaning it will appeal to some people but not the majority of gamers out there.

They contradict each other. Having a "non family friendly game" on a "family friendly" website.
@Greenthumb - My job is to report on the game, whether it be good or bad. These phrases were integral to my point that this game certainly oversteps boundaries. If kids are reading about this game, then they should be mature enough to read about the content. We can't baby every reader, and we try to keep things clean where possible.
So we can be assured that words like ****, bitch, slut etc shouldn't be censored? After all, If they are reading it. They are mature enough to not get offended, right?

I'm not trying to start an argument or what not, I just thought those words should've been half-censored atleast. Given the circumstances.
When used in proper context and they aren't attacking someone then it's okay in my book. If used in a derogatory sense then they should be censored and action to be taken.

Currently going over all our guidelines. In regards to the article this is how I wrote it and I will stand by it.

Ingredients for a great game go sour.

Typo eh?
You mean "GONE" sour!
@gammaray13

Stop lying man! You are not over 18 lol

The new review layout is rubbish though, much prefer the way it was.
Definately agree that this game is extremely average though but offensive? jeez @heller you need to get out more lol
It is offensive, regardless of your own personal views. It's not a question of someone's prudence, it's the overall social standard.

Well its the first review ive seen of this game where its been referred to as 'offensive'. CVG saw it as mearly 'So bad it's good' dialogue.
I don't see the offensive side to it, the game is rated appropriately and anyone who knew about the game kinda expected it. Gosh @Heller found the dialogue in both Duke Forever and Bulletstorm offensive too.
Some of the dialogue in Duke was borderline offensive, Bulletstorm was just stupid. Lollipop Chainsaw goes above the social standards @Silence mentioned, but calling a female a slut on several occasions. Boys refer to her as a sex symbol and openly tell her that they will masterbate over her. How is that acceptable? Would you say that to someone?
Wait... Woah! So I'm guessing I'll need to have my headphones on when I play this or my son might ask me what masterbation is [MOG]

Still wanna get this.. Just looks fun.. I love all those kind of games.. Bulletstorm, saints row the third etc.. Sometimes a bit of swearing and dumb slut stuff makes me laugh.. I like laughing ^_^
I'm just stating that I'm not against swearing or dumb fun, but in my opinion this was far worse than that. It really brought down the experience. I'm all for games being fun and less serious, but I'm not excited about the protagonist being objectified or being subjected to perverted banter every 10 minutes.
I'm so use to sexist comments.. ^_^
I'll do a review to one day once I play it

Oh hai I like the new review set up too :)
I could not walk out of game shop purchasing a game like this and not feel creepy.

I felt fantastic when I walked out of the store. [MOG]

With the whole language thing, did you really not expect this? Just say Suda51. [MOG]
The new review layout is excellent. Much better :)
Everyone prefers the new review layout? Seriously? It was laid out way better before with each pro and con seperated and explained. Now it has an ugly heading giving no incentive to read the review. Why does MMGN have to keep messing with things?
I preferred the last one. If you want to summarise shit, do it at the end.
Just put the right/wrong section at the bottom and its great :D
I liked it when there were separate paragraphs about each wrong/right factor.

But whatever format enables you to write reviews as best you can is fine with me. I'm looking for good reviews, so if you find it harder to write a review where you have to explain each right/wrong factor, then this format would be better. :)

I like it. I don't know why you don't (then again, i don't think i've ever seen you like anything MMGN has done / changed) but yeah, It's fresh and new.

I see your point there and i can't argue with it haha.

This right here, it was far better.

There's a lot i like about these sites actually. Ive been around here since what May2007? and i've seen a lot of changes some for the better (mysites to MMGN for instance) and some for the worst (achievements lol).
I've already explained why i don't like it, plus summing up the review in the first paragraph seems retarded to me. Soon we won't get a review just the summary because that's why this idea has been introduced because people can't be arsed to scroll down and actually read the review.
Perhaps the right/wrong thing would do better as a summary at the bottom of the article than at the beginning? But I don't really mind either style. As Bailey said, whatever gets a better written review out of you ;)

Still, interesting (and apparently controversial) review. :)
So shops can sell this but not mortal kombat makes no sense.
I love this game, I love that it's offensive. They should really get someone with balls to do the reviews for this demographic, because "offended" people aren't going to buy this so the review shouldn't be a harping session about that one major personal objection.

That's called being bias.
in all honesty the game is rather inoffensive
the dialouge is juvinile and silly anyone who is majorly offended probably hasn't played a suda 51 game or actually looked into what he likes to do. he has a punk F U attitude to gaming which is unique the game is far from perfect but its silly rather than offensive with its humour taking inspiration from generally silly grindhouse films

all in all his other games are alot smarter with the immature humour but calling it an almost offensive game is rather juvenile in itself as study has obviously not been done and an attempt to understand has also been thrown out the window
What did people expect, its from Suda 51. It makes me wish no more heroes was on xbox
as long as it has a cheerleader with a chainsaw killing zombies, I'm getting it. I dont care what you say.
Wow, all this hate for heller's review. It is HIS opinion, your may differ, that's what makes the world a great place. Disagree all you want but there is no need for the attitude most of you guys have trotted out.

What attitude? :O

For me i disagree with his sensitivity to such trivial things and to rate a review poorly due to this is just bias in my opinion, i'm completely with @skelerax with this one. But there's no 'attitude', we all love @Heller (love)

Oh and the new review layout does suck. :P
